Hooley Alan Fiewig, Sr., 87, passed away peacefully on August 30, 2026, in Clio, Michigan. Born on April 2, 1939, in Walla Walla, Washington, Hooley was blessed with 87 wonderful years of life.
Hooley spent his early childhood exploring the farm country surrounding Walla Walla before moving to the north side of Flint, Michigan, where he attended high school. The natural world, especially Dewey Woods, shaped his youth, becoming his playground, classroom, and source of adventure. Under the mentorship of his neighbor, Mr. Michaelson, Hooley learned archery, eventually becoming a Flint Bowman’s Club champion. His time helping care for animals at the Dewey Woods Zoo deepened his lifelong appreciation for nature and wildlife. Fishing became another passion, and Hooley spent countless days exploring Michigan’s Northern Lower Peninsula, the Upper Peninsula, and later the lakes of Canada.
During high school, Hooley earned the nickname “Cool Hool,” a fitting title for a young man cruising in his beloved 1957 Buick convertible. It was during those years that he met the love of his life, Barbara Kay Philo, outside Lemieux’s Drug Store, where she worked as a soda jerk. Their chance meeting grew into a remarkable 60-year marriage filled with love, laughter, hard work, and tradition.
Immediately after high school, Hooley began an apprenticeship at Buick Motors, launching a 34-year career with General Motors. He advanced from Journeyman Experimental Machinist to Foreman, General Foreman, and ultimately Superintendent—a career marked by mechanical skill, determination, work ethic, and natural leadership. He retired at age 53, beginning a vibrant and adventure-filled chapter of life.
Hooley lived by the Golden Rule, treating everyone with kindness, respect, and generosity. His retirement years were rich with travel, woodworking, cooking, baking, canning, creating, repairing, and helping his children with projects. He traveled the world with the Flint Senior Adventurers, fished on West Twin Lake in Lewiston, and enjoyed fly-in fishing trips to Canada. He cherished good food and good company, especially visits to the Flacks in Saginaw and memorable meals at the Bavarian Inn in Frankenmuth. Hooley’s culinary traditions—German sausage, kraut bierock, canned goods, fudge, and coffee cakes—became beloved family staples.
Above all, Hooley treasured his role as a grandfather. The “Fie-Ske’s,” as they were affectionately known, brought him immense joy. Christmas Eve traditions—three rounds of gift exchanges and the legendary massive Saran Wrap treasure balls—created unforgettable moments of laughter, chaos, and excitement.
Hooley was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 60 years, Barbara Fiewig (Philo); his mother, Irene Lehr (Dumler); his father, Hooley H. Fiewig; his stepfather, Jacob Lehr, Jr.; and his sister, Janice (Clark) Doan.
He is survived by his sister, Judy (Larry) Clare; his brother-in-law, Robert (Karen) Philo; and his children: Hooley A. Fiewig, Jr. (Peg Middleton Fiewig), Laura Tulgetske (Tony Tulgetske), and Scott Fiewig (Karen Fiewig). Hooley was a proud grandfather to Sean (Rosie) Tulgetske, Kai (Kelsey) Fiewig, Mitch (Anne) Fiewig, Tanner (Susanna) Tulgetske, Grant (Kristine) Fiewig, Hannah (Nic) Fiewig, Zach Tulgetske, Spencer (Brittany) Fiewig, and Cole Fiewig. He was also blessed with two great grandchildren, Willow Fiewig and Logan Fiewig.
Hooley’s greatest legacy is the family he created and the values he lived by—treating others with kindness, working hard, helping family, embracing adventure, and making time for the people you love. From the woods of his childhood to fishing trips in Canada, from his career at General Motors to his woodworking bench in retirement, Hooley lived a life filled with curiosity, accomplishment, and devotion. He was a husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, brother, mentor, friend, craftsman, fisherman, hunter, cook, baker, storyteller, and the proud patriarch of the Fie Ske’s. He will be deeply missed, lovingly remembered, and forever celebrated by all who knew him.
