Born May 2, 1935, in Flint, Michigan, to Floyd and Julia Foster, she was one of seven children. Shirley was a graduate of Beecher High School, Class of 1953. She resided in the Flint area for over 85 years and lived a long life marked by devotion to her family, church family, dear friends, and the interests she enjoyed most.

Introduced by her future father-in-law, Leland Chaney, just outside the Flint Journal in downtown Flint, Shirley met Morris (Bud) Chaney, while he was on leave from the U.S. Air Force. It was love at first sight for the young, beautiful couple. They married six weeks later on October 18th, 1954, in Angola, Indiana. They were together for 62 years until Bud passed away in 2017. Shirley was a devoted wife, a loving mother of five children, and a precious Nana to her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She found great joy in spending time with her family.

Shirley had a very generous and giving spirit and found great joy helping others in need. She was very involved with her children and thoroughly enjoyed volunteering at their schools and in their classrooms. She enjoyed baking cookies and cupcakes for class parties, organizing fund raising events, tutoring children, leading a group of Boy Scouts, and was a proud Flint Northern Viking Band Booster. When help was needed, she was always the first to volunteer her time and talent.

Throughout the years, Shirley was a faithful servant and filled numerous roles as she served the Lord at Dupont Street, Westwood, and New Creation Churches of God. She was a Sunday School Superintendent, President of The Women of the Church of God (Westwood), and served as a choir member, greeter and usher. She was often involved in planning many social events for her church.

Shirley was known for the enthusiasm she brought to the things she followed closely. She was a passionate and devoted fan of the Detroit Tigers. She knew every player well and supported them whether they were doing well or struggling as a team. She was also an avid fan of the University of Michigan football team. She enjoyed ceramics, bowling, reading, and canning. Her family will miss her famous cocoa fudge that was made with love and shared with her children who would occasionally inform their spouse and kids that a newly made batch had arrived. Shirley was a fabulous cook and enjoyed feeding her family.

Shirley leaves behind to cherish her memory, children Lt Col (Ret) Kim A. Chaney (Greta), Morris D. (Bud) Chaney Jr., Julia M. Kohler (Joseph), Todd A. Chaney (Anne), and Kevin C. Chaney (Amy), 24 grandchildren and 32 great-grandchildren, Brother-in-law Dr. Ric Chaney (Pattie), and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Morris D. (Bud) Chaney, Sr., parents Floyd and Julia Foster, and siblings Loretta Blied, Marion Foster, Clarence Foster, Leonard Foster, LD Foster, Sylvia Foster, and John Lequia.
