VUKOVICH, JAMES M. – of Davison, age 85, passed away on August 31, 2020. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated 12:00 PM Friday, September 11, 2020 at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church, 404 N. Dayton St., Davison; Rev. Fr. Andrew A. Czajkowski celebrant. The family will receive visitors from 4-7 PM Thursday, September 10, 2020 at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church and 10 AM until time of Mass on Friday, September 11, 2020. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be considered to Bentley Community Schools.


Jim was born in Flint, MI on August 18, 1935, son of the late Michael and Anna (Drndash) Vukovich. He graduated from Flint Northern High School in 1953 and the University of Michigan in 1957 where he played first base on the Michigan baseball team. After graduation he married the love of his life, Barbara Rashead. He was a member of St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church. Jim was a teacher and counselor at Bentley High School for 36 years, retiring in 1996 and coaching baseball for most of those years winning state championships in 1973 and 1975 and Coach of the Year honors in 1976. He was president of the Genesee Area Counselors Association, Genesee Association of Retired School Personnel, and Flint Northern Alumni Association. Jim was a four-time inductee in the Greater Flint Area Hall of Fame, was inducted into the Michigan Baseball Coaches Hall of Fame, Michigan Coaches Hall of Fame, the Burton Bentley Wall of Fame and had many more honors. He was a member of the Davison Eagles Club and M-Sport Sages. Jim loved puzzles, movies, country music, and golf, but baseball more than anything. He golfed two times a week with his best buddy, Tom McCall up until his death. Jim was respected and loved by his family, many friends, and he had a special place in his heart for his Phi Kappa Sigma brothers and all his baseball players through the years, many of whom he stayed in touch with until his death.

James is survived by his children; Ellen (Jim) Klobuchar, Arlene (Steve) Hildensperger, Jane Vukovich, grandchildren; James (Sarah) Klobuchar, Lauryn (Jason) Lotz, Anna Klobuchar, Russell Hildensperger, and Grace Hildensperger; great-granddaughters, Keira Jane Lotz and Ivy Quinn Klobuchar; sister, Jennie Kalakay. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Barbara; sisters, Ann Bond, Louise Straley and brother-in-law, Phil Rashead.
