SHORKEY, Janet Loraine (Ferrington) – of Lapeer, MI, age 89, passed away Monday, October 5, 2026. A Funeral Service will be held 1 PM Wednesday, October 14, 2026 at Allen Funeral Home, 9136 Davison Road, Davison, MI 48423; Pastor Todd Petty officiating. Interment immediately following the service in Richfield Union Cemetery. The family will receive visitors 11 AM-1 PM Wednesday, October 14, 2026 at Allen Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association, in Janet’s memory.
Janet was born in Flint, MI on January 29, 1937, daughter of the late Ray and Maxine (Roat) Ferrington. A proud graduate of Houghton Lake High School, Janet built a life filled with warmth, community, and simple joys. On July 10, 1981, she married the love of her life, George Shorkey Jr. Together, they shared 45 wonderful years of marriage, creating memories rooted in devotion and partnership, until George’s passing on August 6, 2020. Janet’s life was defined by her heart for service and her comforting presence. She spent many years nourishing young minds and hearts as a cook for several local school systems, eventually retiring from Kettering University. Her kindness, hard work, and bright spirit left a lasting impact on colleagues and students alike. Beyond her work, Janet knew how to enjoy life's sweet moments. She was an avid reader and possessed a wonderfully competitive spirit when it came to card games—especially Euchre, where she was always a force to be reckoned with at the table. Her creative hand brought warmth to those around her through her delicate crochet work, and she found immense peace in the outdoors. Among her favorite adventures were camping trips, with a special place in her heart reserved for her travels to Texas.
Janet’s legacy is one of love, laughter, and lifelong devotion to family and friends. While she will be dearly missed, her memory will live on in every cozy blanket she crafted, every game played around the table, and the quiet beauty of the nature she loved so much.
Janet is survived by 3 children, Charlene Palmer, Marilyn (Edward) Rykulski and Leo (Cyndi Raible) Sutherland; 5 step-children; several grandchildren, great-grandchildren, many other loving family members and dear friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, Ray and Maxine Ferrington; husband, George W. Shorkey Jr.; daughter, Cindy Haviland; grandson, Michael Sutherland and 3 siblings.
