KALANQUIN, John A. – Of Grand Blanc, age 91, died Wednesday, June 3, 2026 at Henry Ford Genesys. Funeral Mass will be celebrated 11am, June 8, 2026 at Holy Redeemer Catholic Church, 1227 East Bristol Road, Burton, Father Steve Anderson officiating. Burial in Evergreen Cemetery. Visitation 5-8pm Sunday at Swartz Funeral Home, 1225 West Hill Road, Flint. A Rosary will be prayed 7pm Sunday evening at the funeral home. Visitation 10am Monday at Holy Redeemer Catholic Church until the time of the Mass.
John was born February 17, 1935 in Flint, Michigan, to LaVern and Charlotte (Baechler). John attended Longfellow Elementary School and St. Michael Catholic School, graduating in 1953. He continued his education at Central Michigan University, Michigan State University, and University of Michigan, and he obtained his Master’s degree from Eastern Michigan University. He was a teacher, coach, drivers’ education instructor, and administrator in the Carman-Ainsworth School District. On June 29, 1957, he married Phyllis Noland, the love of his life, in St Michael Catholic Church. Together, they enjoyed 66 years of marriage until Phyllis’s passing in September 2023. John was known as Papa to all that loved him. Papa loved spending time with family at his cottage in Au Gres, Michigan and fishing for walleye on Lake Huron. He also loved gardening, playing cards, traveling, and drinking very hot coffee. For over 20 years, he enjoyed Monday morning breakfast with his friends. In addition, John was a long-time member of the Holy Redeemer Catholic Church in Burton, Michigan.
He will be dearly missed by: children; Patricia (Timothy) Ferguson of Hoffman Estates, Illinois, Linda (Thomas) Louzon of Royal Oak, Michigan, Judy (Glen) Wild of Copperas Cove, Texas, John P. (Laura) Kalanquin of Saranac, Michigan, Donald (Wendy) Kalanquin of Holly, Michigan, Nancy Irby of Swartz Creek, Michigan and Thomas (Colleen) Kalanquin of Grand Blanc, Michigan, son-in-law; Lyndol Butler of Clinton Township, grandchildren; Emma Ferguson, Max Louzon, Rachel (John) Donaldson, Patrick Louzon, Matthew (Caroline) Butler, Samuel (Katie) Butler, Cathryn (Jarrod) Hart, Anthony (Jennifer) Kalanquin, Scott Wild, Mandy Kalanquin, Katherine (Kole) Guilford, Elizabeth Wilcox, Tyler Kalanquin, Kelly Kalanquin, Jessica (Bill) Naert, Jesse Irby, Liam Irby, Jacqueline (Brad) Walker, Gillian Brown, Jameson Brown, great grandchildren; Joseph Donaldson, Noelle Donaldson, Hailey Kalanquin, Brooklyn Kalanquin, James Butler, Olivia Butler, Calvin Butler, Quinn Butler, Joanna Hart, brother: William (Joy) Kalanquin, and many friends and neighbors.
John was preceded in death by his wife, Phyllis Kalanquin, daughter, Jan Mary Butler, son, James Joseph Kalanquin, parents; LaVern and Charlotte Kalanquin, brothers; Raymond, Albert (and wife Gloria), George (and wife Patricia), Vern, and sister, Mary Ann Kalanquin.
