Katie was born May 16, 1936, in Katsch, Yugoslavia, the daughter of the late Wilhelm and Katherine (Koch) Gutwein.
In 1945, during World War II, her family fled to Germany and settled in Bavaria, where she first met Jacob Gerstheimer in grade school. In 1949, her family immigrated to
Canada, where she was later reunited with Jacob through mutual acquaintances. The two were married May 19, 1956, in Kingsville, Ontario.
Following their marriage, Katie and Jacob relocated to the United States. Katie attended Windsor Beauty School in Canada and worked as a cosmetologist in downtown Flint for several years. She later chose to work from home, styling women's hair for over 25 years while raising her family. Katie and Jacob were faithful members of Peace
Presbyterian Church, where she was active in the Ladies Guild.
Katie devoted herself to her family and lovingly supported her husband throughout his life. She was an exceptional baker, especially known for her traditional German pastries, and she cherished hosting gatherings where everyone felt welcome. Her kitchen was always open to anyone who walked through her door.
Katie will be remembered by her family as a wonderful listener, a great dancer, and a stylish dresser, with a warm and loving personality that made every family gathering
unforgettable.
Katie is survived by her beloved husband of 70 years, Jacob; children, Kathy (Robert) Wickes, Gary Gerstheimer, and Christian (Tracy Speaker-Gerstheimer) Gerstheimer;
seven grandchildren, Joshua, Justin, Jodi, Haley, Courtney, Lorin, and Jacob; seven great-grandchildren; brother, Otto (Leni) Gutwein; and many nieces, nephews, and
friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Wilhelm and Katherine Gutwein; and her sister, Mary Febel.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Katie's memory may be made to the Alzheimer's Association or the American Macular Degeneration Foundation.
