Elmer was born in Flint, Michigan on July 7, 1930, the son of the late George and Pearl (Mayo) Monroe. He proudly served his country in the U.S. Army during the Korean War, a time that deepened his lifelong sense of patriotism and devotion to his country. He enjoyed working as a licensed optician for many years in the Flint area. He also worked many years at AC Spark Plug and retired from there. Elmer carried on his family’s farming legacy, continuing his father’s farm in Flushing, raising various livestock and cash crops. He was an active member of several tractor clubs. Elmer was a true outdoorsman and avid hunter, often waking others early saying, “Daylight in the swamp, bucks are on the run”. He would travel many miles to see his grandchildren, giving, and helping as often as he could. He enjoyed his time at the cottage on Higgins Lake and spent winters in Florida. He always encouraged those he loved to attend Sunday School. He was passionate about his faith. “Thank You Jesus!” He was a kind and caring man who loved people unconditionally. Elmer was always keeping busy but could NEVER be rushed. He was known for his sharp style, often wearing his signature look with a cowboy hat, bolo tie, and boots. His perfectly primped hair was always just right, a reflection of the care he took in everything he did.
Elmer is survived by his children, Deborah Sue Monroe (Bryan) Bonelli, Janice (Frederick) Chandonnet, Douglas George (Charlene Pasionek) Monroe, and Jeffrey E. (Leah) Monroe; 10 grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren; and girlfriend, Audrey.
He was preceded in death by his wives, Rosemary and Phyllis; daughter, Shawn; parents, George and Pearl; brother, Ernest; and sisters, Marie and Maxine.
