O'LEARY, Phyllis Jean (Varner) - Of Flint, age 86, passed away Wednesday, October 31, 2018 at her home.
Cremation has taken place and a memorial service will be held at Wood Haven Community Center at 11:30am Thursday, November 8, 2018, with Rev. Gerald Johnston officiating.
Should friends desire, contributions may be made to the family or memorials may be sent in Phyllis’ honor to the Fraser Road Church of God Quilting Ministry.
Born on November 23, 1931 to the late Blaine and Lena Varner in Alpena, Phyllis grew up in the mid-Michigan area and graduated from Remus High School in 1949. She married her first husband, the late Michael Ockert, on December 9, 1950 and together they had five children. While attending St. Louis Campmeeting in 1967 she met and later married Reverend Donald D. O’Leary on May 20, 1968. Phyllis played the piano and served as the church secretary at the churches Rev. Don pastored throughout the years, including Hilltop Church of God in Flint as well as churches in Greenville, Michigan and Grand Bend, Ontario. Don and Phyllis then spent 10 years traveling with their puppet ministry before retiring to the Flint area. Phyllis was a member of the Women of the Church of God (WCG) for 35 years and served at her local church as well as on the state level of the WCG. She enjoyed reading and knitting and made hundreds of dish clothes for her daughters and granddaughters throughout the years.
Phyllis was preceded in death by her parents and brothers Virgil and Verle Varner.
Phyllis is survived by her loving husband of 50 years, her children, Nancy (Reginald) Beecher, Michael (Jean) Ockert, Wanda (Brian) O’Leary, John (Mary Jane) Ockert, Joanne (Donald) Hendrick, James (Karen) O’Leary, and Jeff (Janet) O’Leary, her sister Marilyn Funk, her sister-in-law June Varner, twenty-five grandchildren, and many great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.
