Karnes, Jr., Monkota O. of Mt. Morris, formerly of Flushing, 75, passed away suddenly November 2, 2017 at Hurley Hospital. Cremation has taken place. A Celebration of Life lunch will be 12:30 p.m. Saturday, November 11, 2017, at Mt. Morris Free Methodist Church, 2115 W. Mt. Morris Road, Mt. Morris, MI. Bring your fun memories to share. If desired, memorial contributions may be made to Missionary Flights International, account number 2808-Karnes; MFI is an organization in which his nephew Philip Karnes is a missionary pilot.
Monty was born in Decatur, IL, January 11, 1942, the son of Monkota O. Sr. and Alice (Stone) Karnes. He married Mary Lou Farr and together they had four children. He later married Sharon Penewell and had one child.
Mr. Karnes was a teacher and coach. He taught biology at Beecher High School and Flint Central High School for 18 years. He served as Aquatics Director at the Flint YMCA for three years and taught swimming at Carman and Mott Community College for many years. His last career was with the Department of Corrections. He also worked as an EMT and taught EMT courses at Mott Community College and was an instructor at the American Red Cross, teaching CPR, First Aid, and Water Safety Instructor courses.
Mr. Karnes enjoyed serving his community as a past president of the Civitan Service Club in Flint and past president of Northwest Camp of Gideons. He was a master gardener and shared his love of gardening by teaching inmates horticulture at the Lapeer Correctional Facility. Monty’s great passions were his family, teaching, scuba diving, biking, swimming, gardening, and any time spent with his sister Karen.
Monty is survived by his sister, Karen (Earl) Wright; children, Michelle (Darwin) Orvis; Michael (Jennifer) Karnes, Maureen (George) Castle and Alexander (Codee) Karnes; grandchildren, Monica, George, Riley and Merry Castle, Nicole and Nathan Orvis, Bailey and Emma Karnes, and Alexander Karnes, Jr.; sister-in-law, Judi Casey, PhD; nephews, Phil and David Karnes; many cousins; great-nieces and nephews; special neighbors; and his church family. Monty was preceded in death by his parents; daughter, Monica Lou Karnes; and brother, Thomas Karnes.

Monty never met a stranger with his quick smile and easy banter. May his love of life and God continue to shine through his children and grandchildren.
