Irene Brown Kimball, 87, of Aledo, IL. Owner and operator of the Kimball Cleaners in Aledo for over 50 years, died Friday March 11, 2011 at the Mercer County Nursing Home in Aledo. Mass of Christian Burial is 10:00 AM Monday at St. Catherine’s Catholic Church in Aledo. Burial is in the Aledo cemetery. Visitation is from 3 – 5:30 PM Sunday at Fippinger Funeral Home in Aledo where a Rosary will be recited at 5:30 PM. Online condolences can be made at www.fippingerfuneralhome.com

Irene was born January 2, 1924 in Aledo a daughter of David A. and Grace Hickock Brown. She graduated from Aledo High School in 1941 and attended Monmouth College. On September 29, 1951 she was united in marriage to James R. Kimball at St. Catherine’s Catholic Church in Aledo. He died December 28, 1981.

Irene was known for many years for her 4H Project, a Black Angus Aberdeen Steer named “Mercer. ” At the age of 14, Irene took Mercer to the Illinois State Fair in Springfield where she was awarded Grand Champion and a chance to compete for the International prize at the Chicago Union Stock Yards. On the 4th Day of showing, she and Mercer were awarded the coveted prize of International Grand Champion Steer and Irene became the first girl in history to own and show an international grand champion steer. Mercer was auctioned off to Harvey Firestone, owner of Firestone Tire Company, and Mercer toured throughout the country at fairs and shows ending up at the World’s Fair in New York thus, ending what many call today an incredible story.

Her memberships include St. Catherine’s Catholic Church and its Altar and Rosary Society and the DAR. She enjoyed socializing with friends and cherished her involvement with various bridge clubs.

Survivors include a daughter, Mary (Cecil) Thorndike of Warsaw, IN, a son, Mark (Elizabeth) Kimball of Aledo, 3 grandchildren, Alicia Kimball, James Kimball, Jessica Thorndike all of Chicago and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, 3 sisters, Doris Nelson, Ina Mae Warnock, Helen Henderson and 2 brothers Clarence “Bub” and Raus Brown.
