VAN HOUTEN, Robert Gene - Of Swartz Creek, age 81, died Sunday, July 29, 2018.

Funeral service will be held 1pm Thursday, August 2, 2018 at the Swartz Funeral Home, 1225 West Hill Road, Flint,

Deacon Omar Odette officiating.

Cremation has taken place. Burial in Great Lakes National Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Wounded Warriors Project.

Visitation 11am Thursday until the time of the service at the funeral home.

Robert was born in Flint on September 4, 1936, the son of Frank & Kathryn Van Houten. He graduated from St. Agnes Catholic High School in the Class of 1954. Robert proudly served his country in the U.S. Navy and married his sweetheart Evelyn Koviak on November 7, 1959. Mr. Van Houten was employed as a tinsmith for General Motors, retiring from AC Spark Plug after 42 years of service in 1997.

Surviving are his wife Evelyn;

son Michael and wife Robin, his children Mallory & Emily;

daughters Robin Moore & her children, Mitchell & Nicholas; Judy Fargo & husband Michael and their children Willem & Allison; Jenna (daughter of Mark) & husband Phillip Welch and their daughter Maeve;

2 brothers, Joseph and wife Dalene Van Houten, Daniel & wife Jeannie Van Houten;

brother-in-law, Paul Schaeffer;

many nieces and nephews.

Robert was predeceased by his son, Mark, sister, Sandra and his parents.
