Genevieve Katheryn “Jennie” Root Luchenbill

October 21, 1925 - October 12, 2026

Genevieve Katheryn “Jennie” Root Luchenbill, of Durand, Michigan, passed away on October 12, 2026, at the age of 100, just nine days shy of her 101st birthday. Her remarkable life was filled with love, family, traditions, and memories that will live on for generations.

Jennie was born on October 21, 1925, in Clinton, Michigan, to Guy Andrew Root and Lavina Rosalia Myers Root. She was the sixth of eight children. Her family eventually settled in Owosso, where she attended school beginning in the second grade and graduated from Owosso High School in 1944, during the height of World War II.

As a teenager, Jennie worked at the candy counter at Woolworth’s five-and-dime store in downtown Owosso. She fondly recalled chopping large blocks of chocolate and sneaking the tiny shavings that were too small to sell. That early experience sparked a lifelong love of chocolate, and her famous kitchen “candy cupboard” became a sweet tradition enjoyed by generations of family.

Following high school, Jennie attended Melba Beauty School in Lansing, graduating in 1945 as a hairstylist and hair colorist. Life soon took her in another direction when she married Wyman Luchenbill on September 15, 1945, and began her life as a farmer’s wife in Vernon Township.

Together, Jennie and Wyman raised four children: Ronald, Terry, Randall, and Connie. During their 38 years of marriage, Jennie devoted herself to her family and the demands of farm life, demonstrating the strength, determination, and work ethic that defined her generation.

Jennie was a woman of many talents. A wonderful cook and baker, she was especially known for her Sunday family dinners. Alongside her sister Flora, she baked and decorated beautiful, elaborate wedding cakes. She also enjoyed bowling for many years with her Tuesday morning ladies’ league, affectionately known as the “Flower Pots.” Her artistic talents extended to drawing, painting, and quilting, including the beautiful quilts she lovingly created for her grandchildren.

Perhaps one of Jennie’s greatest pleasures was reading. An avid reader throughout her life, she continued enjoying two or three books a week even at the age of 100. Once finished, she generously donated her books to the Vernon Library so others could enjoy them as well.

Throughout her retirement years, Jennie remained active in her community, working at the Durand Depot gift shop, the Durand Senior Center, and even making homemade biscuits for McDonald’s.

Jennie will always be remembered for her independent spirit and her love of family.

Jennie is survived by her children, Ronald (Jamie) Luchenbill, Terry (Dave) Johnson, and Connie Reynolds (Dave); grandchildren, RJ, Guy, and Cody Luchenbill, Kristine Steiner (Jason), Cole Reynolds (Sara), and Dilon (Stephanie) Reynolds; great-grandchildren, Mason and Raiden Luchenbill, and Nolan and Nora Reynolds; as well as many other loving family members and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her son, Randall Luchenbill; and her siblings, Ned (Ruth) Root, Orpha (Bob) Boyd, Lillian (Charles) Spendlove, Mary (James) Clouse, Flora (Claud) Spiess, Bill (Ella) Root, and Betty Lou Root.
