SMITH, Mrs. Mary L. - Age 74, passed away Sunday, January 11, 2015 at McLaren-Flint. Family hour 10 a.m. Saturday, January 17, 2015 at Greater Friendship Azusa Church of God In Christ, G-5165 Detroit Street, with funeral service commencing at 11 a.m. Supt. Birdies J. Shields, Jr. Host Pastor, Elder Carlton E. Johnson, Sr. officiating. Interment Sunset Hills Association, G-4413 Flushing Rd. Friends and pallbearers will assemble at the church 10 a.m. Saturday. Mrs. Smith will lie in state in the Chapel of Lawrence E. Moon Funeral Home, and may be viewed from 12 noon-8 p.m. Friday.
Mrs. Mary Louise Smith was born October 1, 1940 in Starkville, Mississippi, the daughter of the late Ollie and Rebecca Johnson. She confessed Christ at an early age and became a member of Trinity Temple Church Of God In Christ which later was renamed Higher Dimensions Church Of God In Christ under the leadership of Supt. Sammie L. Hall (Pastor). She faithfully served on several auxiliaries including, Mother’s Board and Hospitality Board. She also looked forward to family gatherings during the holidays. Mary loved preparing your favorite meals by request. Mary Smith was also known as “Aunt Mary” for baking those delicious Sweet Potato Pies served at her nephews restaurant, Carl’s Best. Mrs. Mary L. Smith was a devoted wife of the late John H. Smith.
Mrs. Mary Louise Smith leaves to cherish her sweet memories: daughters, Mary F. (Jerome) Edwards of Houston, TX, Rosie (David) Young, Lisa Johnson, both of Flint, Mary Ann (Melvin) James of Glenn Heights, TX, LaShawn Baker of Flint and Latoya Smith of Fort Worth, TX; grandchildren, NaKisha Johnson, Tia (Seneca) Jones, Archie (Michelle) Walker, Aubrey Walker, Jaylen Bransford, Ryan Farrar and Taylor Farrar; great-granddaughters, Seniyah Jones and Aaliyah Lawrence; 1 sister, Recbecca Johnson of Tupelo, MS; 1brother, Benville Johnson of Flint, MI; very special nephew and niece, Elder Carlton E. Sr.(Cathy) Johnson; a host of other nieces, nephews, aunts, uncle, other relatives and friends including special friends, Ermma Hall, Olga Williams and Valerie Miller.
Mrs. Smith was preceded in death by her parents, Ollie and Rebecca Johnson; siblings, Earl Evans, Clara Randles, Robert Johnson, Ollie Johnson, Lillie B. Johnson, Willie B. Jennings and Charlie Johnson.
