Mildred “Millie” Smith, age 89, of Lapeer, died Wednesday, December 6, 2017. She was born September 5, 1928 in Curryville, Missouri, to David and Dollie (Barker) Saylor.
Mrs. Smith was a Supervisor at Oakdale Center in Lapeer for over 30 years, retiring in September of 1986. She married George A. Smith on January 6, 1996 at the Lapeer Church of the Nazarene, where they were longtime members. Mrs. Smith enjoyed being the weekend receptionist at Seven Ponds Nature Center for over 13 years. She also volunteered at Lapeer Regional Hospital and the Lapeer Citizens Probation Council. Millie sincerely cared about all her family and friends, she had a “heart of gold”. Everyone at Stonegate, where she lived these past few years, will miss her sincere kindness. Family meant everything to Mrs. Smith, she truly loved her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Millie is survived by her children: Lee (Linda) Wheeler of Howell, Curtis (Marlene) Wheeler of Lapeer and Bruce (Jo Marie) McArthur of Georgia; grandchildren: Melanie, Tracy, Brandi, Brent, Nicole, Christopher, Jessica, Sean, Eric, Randy, Ryan and Aaron; 24 great-grandchildren; sister: Dolly Powers of Quincy, Illinois; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband: George Smith; parents: David and Dollie Saylor; 4 brothers and 3 sisters.
Visitation will be 5-8PM Friday, December 8, 2017, at Muir Brothers Funeral Home in Lapeer. Millie’s funeral service will be 11:00AM Saturday, December 9, 2017, at Muir Brothers Funeral Home. Pastor Mike Hefner will officiate the service, with burial to follow in Mt. Hope Cemetery in Lapeer. Memorial contributions may be made to Lapeer Church of the Nazarene, 3523 Fort Knox Dr., Lapeer, MI 48446 or Seven Ponds Nature Center, 3854 Crawford Rd., Dryden, MI 48428.
