Margaret Adele Gettel

Born: 3/16/1942
Died: 2/10/2026
Age: 83
Community: Lapeer, MI

Margaret Adele Gettel, age 83, of Lapeer formerly of Imlay City, died February 5, 2026. She was born March 16, 1942 in Detroit, to Peter and Alice (Partridge) Skeberdis.

Margaret graduated in 1960 from Imlay City High School. Margaret married the love of her life in 1966, Merlin Robert “Bob” Gettel. While they raised their beloved son “Jimmy” who died tragically in 1999, she worked at Lapeer State Home (Oakdale Center), where she was an attendant. During that time, she attended Mott Community College and University of Michigan-Flint to continue her education and become a Registered Nurse. After Oakdale Center closed, Margaret received her nursing certification working at Beaumont Hospital in Royal Oak and went on to retire as a Registered Nurse at Caro State Hospital.

Margaret was an active member and supporter of Lapeer Area Elks Lodge #2567, Lapeer American Legion Post #16 Auxiliary and the Lapeer Lions Club. She enjoyed time spent at the Elks Lodge with many dear friends and supporting the American Legion…whether walking in parades or working on fund raisers. Margaret and her late husband, Bob, worked tirelessly for the Lapeer Lions Club and all their charity functions. Bob was the past governor of the Michigan Lions Club and Margaret supported him throughout his time with the Club. Margaret was a longtime, devoted member of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Lapeer.

Mrs. Gettel was a wonderful cook and loved to share her tasty food with family and friends, including Lithuanian pudding (Kugelis), yummy roast beef or pancakes. She was a talented seamstress: sewing many suits for Jimmy, quilting with many local groups and crocheting many beautiful afghans for family. Margaret loved to travel: whether camping, taking cruises, boating or taking a tour bus…she enjoyed the adventure and friendships made along the way. She was an honest, outspoken, direct, and a truly caring person.

Margaret is survived by her siblings: Alexandra (Dennis) Geniac of East Tawas, Esther (Peter) Pawlowicz of Johnson City, Tennessee and David Skeberdis of Aurora, Illinois; and many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. She was preceded in death by her loving husband Merlin “Bob” Gettel; dear son: Jimmy “Jim” Gettel; parents: Peter and Alice Skeberdis; and siblings: Alice Kim and Peter Skeberdis.
