Richard H. Wicklund, age 80, of Burton, Michigan passed away on Thursday, February 6, 2025. Richard was born in Duluth, Minnesota, July 12, 1944, to his parents, Herbert E. Wicklund and Margaret P. (Hanson) Wicklund. He lived in Duluth in his early years, then the family moved to his grandparents' small farm in Saginaw, Minnesota, in 1948, where he attended grade school. In 1954 the Wicklund family moved to Flint, Michigan, where his father worked for GM's Ternstedt plant. His mother worked as a beautician for the Empress Beauty Shop, then later owning it.
Richard and his family moved to Beecher School District in 1957, just north of Flint, where he graduated from Beecher High School in 1965. He attended Central Michigan University in 1966, but was drafted into the U.S. Army during the summer. While in the Army he served in Vietnam 1967-1968, as a support soldier. Then served in Germany 1968-1969, part of which was as a chaplain's assistant. As Regular Army, he served a third year, and was honorably discharged in Sept., 1969, as Specialist 5th Class.
Richard returned to Central Michigan in 1969, and graduated with a secondary education degree in 1972. Unable to find a job in that field, he worked briefly at the Ternstedt GM plant and at AC Spark Plug in Flint. In this time, he worked under a government program at Crossroads Village, a historic park underdevelopment by the Genesee County Parks in 1975, which officially opened in 1976. However, in February of 1976 he returned to AC Spark Plug (late Delphi) in production until retiring in December 2003, with 30 years of service.
Most all of his life, history was an interest, mainly in Great Lakes history, including its lighthouses, but particularly the ships and the company's that sailed them. An avid photographer this was often his subject all along the shores of the Great Lakes. He became an author and presented programs to historical societies, with membership in several over the years, but particularly the Saginaw River Marine Historical Society, Bay City, Michigan, and the Marine Historical Society of Detroit, where he was named historian of the year for 2014.
Also of interest, automotive history, including Flint's link, as the "Vehicle City."
Most importantly, Richard put his faith and trust in the Lord Jesus Christ in 1963. Involved in churches and ministry, the Word of God was his passion and guide. In later years he was a member of Trinity Baptist Church, Flushing, Michigan. There serving as an usher, substitute adult Sunday School Teacher, and part of their R.U. Recovery addictions and jail ministry.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and an infant brother, Gerald Peter Wicklund (born December 1, 1949, died December 3, 1949). He is survived by his brother, Lloyd E. (Jean) Wicklund; nephew, Joseph E. Wicklund; niece, Lisa Lynn Smith; and many cousins.
However, finding great friends along the way for sure, and the greatest friend, the Lord Jesus Christ! (John 15 - abiding in Him!)
