SCHOLT, Grayce M. – age 92, died Sunday, March 11 2018 Mission Point Lighthouse, Holly, Michigan.

A funeral service will be held 1pm Friday, May 25, 2018 at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, 711 South Saginaw, Flint, Michigan, Father Dan Scheid and The Reverend Doctor Gary Erdos will officiate. Visitation will take place at 12 noon. A luncheon will follow the service.

Inurnment will take place at St. Paul’s Columbarium.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, Mott College (the Grayce Scholt Scholarship Fund), the Humane Society of Genesee County, the Flint Institute of Arts, or East Village Magazine.

Grayce was born in Oak Harbor, Ohio on August 2, 1925, the daughter of Otto Scholt and Clara Bebow Scholt. She earned her BA and MA at Bowling Green State University in Ohio and did graduate work at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. She also spent a year of study at the University of Vienna, Austria, which included travel to several other European and North African countries. In 1954 she joined the faculty of Mott College and became a professor of English, specializing in Children’s Literature for over 35 years.

She was a Trustee of the Flint Institute of Arts, a sponsor of the Flint Symphony and the Flint Institute of Music, and supported many other local, national and international organizations working to improve social, economic and environmental conditions.

Grayce was given several awards for her service to Mott College: the Golden Apple, the Outstanding Teaching Award, and the Outstanding Retiree Award; awards for her service to St. Paul’s Episcopal Church: Outstanding Volunteer Service Award and the Rector’s Cross; awards for her service to former Flint public radio station WFBE; and a Certificate of Recognition for her community service from the mayor of Flint on her 90th birthday.

Grayce wrote, edited, and drew cartoons for the Mott faculty union newsletter, Forward; wrote over 150 art reviews for the Flint Journal; published numerous book reviews in Choice, as well as helped write newsletters for a number of nonprofits. Beginning in 2008 until her death over 100 of her poems were published in the East Village Magazine. She also published several books of poetry: Bang! Go All the Porch Swings, Night Song, and East of Everywhere.

As an artist, she worked primarily in watercolor, pen and ink and ceramics. In 2004 the Mott Fine Arts Gallery featured her ceramic works in her solo show titled “On the Fifth Day”.

Grayce adopted many dogs and cats through the years and faithfully fed the squirrels and birds in her yard.

Surviving are her niece, Denise (Craig) Holcomb; nephew-in-law, Arnold Seeger; great-nephew, Mark (Mary Beth) Seeger; great-niece, Luanne (Gary) Erdos; great-great-nephews, Tristan and Travis Seeger and Andrew (Samantha) Erdos and Peter Erdos and, her dear friend, Jane Bingham.

She was preceded in death by her parents; sister, Gladys (Harmon) Haynes; niece, Shirley Seeger and dear friend, Susan Kilmer.

The family is grateful for all the loving kindnesses from friends and caregivers during her long illness.
