JoAnne was born in Flint, MI on September 1,1932, daughter of the late Anthony and Edna (Smith) Hiteshew. She was a proud graduate of Bendle High School, Class of 1951, beginning a life defined by devotion to family, faith, and community. On April 27, 1951, she married the love of her life, David Barkman, in Burton, MI, starting a partnership that would be the foundation of so much joy and shared purpose. Her faith was a guiding light throughout her life. JoAnne was a dedicated member of Bentley Wesleyan Church for 61 years and later an 8-year member of Richfield Church of the Nazarene. Her church families were deeply important to her, and she found great meaning in worship, fellowship, and service. JoAnne had a remarkable gift for creating with her hands and expressing love through her talents. She enjoyed sewing and knitting, lovingly making baby clothing, warm winter outfits, Halloween costumes, and even choir uniforms. Each stitch was a reflection of her caring spirit and her desire to give comfort and joy to others. She treasured simple pleasures and meaningful gatherings—picnics, camping trips, traveling, and outings with friends and family. Whether near or far, JoAnne delighted in sharing experiences and making memories with those she loved most. Her life was one of quiet generosity, steady faith, and deep devotion to family and community. She will be remembered for the warmth of her heart, the care she showed through her handmade creations, and the countless lives she touched with her kindness.
JoAnne is survived by her husband, Dave Barkman; 8 children, David (Verna) Barkman Jr., Patricia Barkman, Duane (Linda) Barkman, Dale (Jan) Barkman, Teresa (Jim) Booth, Carol Petry, Dan Barkman and Marilyn (John) Woodhull; 26 grandchildren; 36 great-grandchildren; 3 great-great-grandchildren; sister-in-law, Genevieve Hiteshew; life-long-best friend, Betty Monzo; many other loving family members and dear friends.
