Steve Tunk, 98, of Grand Blanc, passed away on Tuesday, December 23rd. Steve was born on September 9, 1927, in St. Charles, Michigan. He was born on his parents’ farm. They lost the farm during the Depression and moved back to Flint. Steve grew up in the Detroit St./Pasadena area where he had many friends and adventures. When he was 15 years old, Hank of Hank’s Shoe Repair took Steve on as an apprentice. He worked part time and attended Flint Northern High School. After graduating he opened his own shoe repair shop on Detroit St near Flint Park Blvd. In 1949 he began work at Buick and continued to own his shoe repair store. Eventually, he gave up the shoe repair business and gave his all to Buick for 42 years. He rose from the line to work in Buick’s Experimental Lab.
Friday nights found Steve and his friends at the Flint IMA for dances with the Big Bands playing. He met his future wife, Margaret Daly, at one of the dances. They were married on August 6, 1949. They were married for 64 years.
Steve was always busy working on projects from building two sailboats, the family cottage at Houghton Lake, building cupboards, reupholstering furniture and outdoor work including a small vegetable garden. Steve and Margaret traveled all over the United States, Ireland, a trip to Europe and winters in Arizona. Steve and Margaret were also known for their parties with friends and family.
Left to cherish his memory are his daughter, Judy Henley, son, Mike Tunk and grandchildren, Josh (Megan) Henley, Sarah Henley, Brian Tunk (Sarah Mackey) and David Tunk (Shannon Doxey). Great Grandchildren, Ella, Maddie, Zane, Beau, Jack, Kate, Reid and Landon. Cousin, Fr. Frank Eckart and many nieces and nephews and dear friends.
