Joseph Alfred Besaw, of New Lothrop, died peacefully at home on August 30, 2026.
Born February 2, 1936, to Joseph and Mary Besaw in Flint, Michigan, he grew up in the Mayfair District, attending the Beckwith School.
He married Diane Duncan on September 12, 1981, and they shared almost 45 years together. He is survived by his wife, Diane; sons, Clifford (Janet) Besaw, Joseph (Denise) Besaw, Jeff (Bobbi) Duncan; daughters, Hildavi Dice, Marijo Clark, Camay Morgan (Dan); grandchildren, Trisha Besaw (Adam), Zach (Sireeka) Besaw, Sabrina (Troy) Smith, Ronald Allen, Gracie Jo (Dustin) Greco, Nicole (David) Theodore, Allison Morgan (Kyle), Tabitha Blackburn, and Justin Duncan; great-grandchildren, Jameson and Sawyer Smith, Lein and Lilli Blackburn, Cameron Newman, and a fifth one on the way. He also leaves behind a very close friend, Dave Klein. ??He was preceded in death by his parents; five brothers; one sister, and son in law, Ronald Allen.
Joe started working for a farmer at the young age of ten, and that developed into a love for tilling the soil and watching the crops grow. He eventually purchased his own farm in New Lothrop and continued farming his entire life. His request just before passing was to be able to drive by each piece of property he owned one last time.??He took great pride in his farm and kept it immaculate—no weeds, tools shed floors swept, and lawn always mowed and trimmed. His favorite saying was, “you never run out of work on the farm; there is always something to do.” He thought if you put in a long day of work, it was a good day. He was also a meat cutter and owned and operated several restaurants with Gracie’s in New Lothrop being the first, then Brass Bell, and finally the King and I. ??He was a man of his word, honest, and trust worthy. He dearly loved his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren and wife, Diane.
He had a love for horses and enjoyed riding on the trails when they had a cabin near Luzerne, making friends and great memories around the campfire. He loved his horse, Billy, and a cat named Smokie, whom he rescued and brought home.
He is now at peace in his heavenly home with his Savior. He will be greatly missed beyond words and will be carried in the hearts of those who loved him. A special thank you to Rachel, Keisha and Mary, his hospice workers, who were so very kind and empathetic.
Visitation will be held on Tuesday, September 1, 2026, from 3-8 PM, at McGeehan Funeral Homes, 9405 Butternut Street, New Lothrop. ??
A Funeral Service will be held on Wednesday, September 2, 2026, 11 AM, at New Lothrop Church of the Nazarene, 7406 Saginaw Street, New Lothrop. Burial Elmwood Cemetery. A luncheon will follow at the church. **Due to road construction/paving, will likely need to arrive to the church from the south (Allen Road to New Lothrop Rd).**
Memorial contributions may be made in his name to the New Lothrop Church of the Nazarene or to New Lothrop FFA.
