Marilyn Sue (Skodinski) Pointer
Marilyn Sue (Skodinski) Pointer passed away as the first rays of dawn light filtered through her window on Friday, June 20, five days past her 80th birthday.
A visitation will be held on Wednesday, June 25 from 2am-8pm at Swartz Funeral Home, 1225 West Hill Road, Flint.
A Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Thursday, June 26 at 11:00am at Holy Redeemer Church, 1227 E Bristol Rd, Burton, MI 48529. Father Georges Roger Bidzogo officiating.
Marilyn was born in Flint, Michigan on June 15, 1945 to Julia Joan (Thompson) and Daniel C. Skodinski of Antigo, Wisconsin.
For the first four years of her life, “Susie” as she was known as a little girl, lived with her parents and brother, Dennis, in the upstairs apartment of her aunt and uncle’s house on a street named Pengelly, where she began her sisterly bond with her beloved cousin, Diane. The family moved into their own home, walking distance from Holy Redeemer Catholic Church, where she attended from first grade through graduation, forming the life-long friendships with “The Girls,” Cheryl, Rose Marie, Mary Helen, Vivian, Mary Rita, and Trudy.
Marilyn was introduced to Michael A. Pointer on a blind date. They married in 1965 and soon had Tracy, followed by Erik, and then Wendy, all within 3 1/2 years.
Marilyn was a playful mother, always telling her children stories from her youth, like how she beat the neighborhood boys at marbles or how she and two friends dressed as roller-skating Martians for Halloween. She taught them the importance of family history and traditions, and she was devoted to her parents. Marilyn always sought to discover each of her children’s unique talents, encouraging them and providing what they needed to develop those interests.
Known for her great sense of humor, she loved pranks, especially with “The Girls,” during their getaways, when she would hide a giant rat or Bob the Arm.
She decorated for every holiday and shopped at craft shows with her cousins Diane (St. Germain) Macksood and Loretta (Thompson) Malin, known to each other as Hoppa One, Hoppa Two, and Hoppa Three. The three “Hoppas” spent summers traveling through Michigan, enjoying lighthouses, beaches, and more craft shows, packing enough food in the car to feed an army. Polish pierogi and Slovene poticia were tradition at holidays, and after proclaiming that “Polacks are big on mushrooms,” she was dubbed “The Mushroom Maven” and the “Pierogi Princess,” by her son-in-law, Gary. She helped her daughter at her art shows with Tracy’s in-laws, Carolyn and Gary Fisher, who became some of Marilyn’s closest friends. Carolyn and Marilyn called themselves “The Worker Bees” and summer weekends were filled with laughter and silliness. Her constant friend, Jane Frasier, provided support and friendship that is truly beyond immeasurable, personally delivering Holy Communion, when Marilyn could no longer attend Mass. She was a fantastic cook, an ardent planter of copious flowers every spring, a voracious reader of mysteries, and was very attached to her two miniature poodles, Tinker, and then Teddy. Perhaps most of all, she had great pride in her grandchildren, holding them close in her heart.
Her eyes were the color of a bright blue sky.
Marilyn is survived by:
Her children, Tracy (Pointer) Fisher (Husband Gary Fisher), Erik Pointer (Wife Monica Pointer), Wendy Pointer. Her grandchildren Abigail, Amelia, William, and Eleanor Pointer. Brother, Dennis Skodinski (Judy) and nephews, Anthony and Gregory Skodinski. Sister-in-law Connie (Pointer) Markva and nieces and nephews, Craig, Kurt, Keith, David, Sarah, Susan, Julie, and Christy.
She was preceded in death by her ex-husband, Mike Pointer, her parents Julia and Daniel Skodinski, and niece Janet Skodinski. Cousins Diane (St. Germain) Macksood, Loretta (Thompson) Malin.
Marilyn will be interred at New Calvary Cemetery in Flint, Michigan.
Please consider a donation in Marilyn’s name to: Meals on Wheels.
