Mary Jo Byk, of Grand Blanc, passed away peacefully on July 2, 2026, at the age of 81.
She was born on April 14, 1945, in Flint, Michigan, to Gazy and Vivian (Ballard) Carol. Mary met Stanley Byk through mutual friends, and after a brief courtship, she knew she wanted to marry him. Together they shared 58 wonderful years of marriage, building a loving home, raising a family, and creating a lifetime of cherished memories. Mary held Stan on a pedestal, and it was apparent to everyone around her that he was her rock and her greatest earthly source of strength.
Mary graduated from Mercy College in Detroit with a bachelor's degree in Education. She began her career teaching at St. Michael High School in Flint and Holy Family Grade School in Grand Blanc before dedicating herself wholeheartedly to her greatest vocation: being a devoted wife, mother, caregiver, and steadfast guardian of her family.
Above all else, Mary's greatest priorities were her faith in God and her family. Her Catholic faith guided her life and was evident in the quiet, steadfast way she lived each day. She very rarely missed Sunday Mass and was a faithful member of Holy Family Catholic Church in Grand Blanc for 60 years. Mary had a generous and compassionate spirit, quietly giving of herself to those in need. She served as a Girl Scout leader, was a devoted member of the Holy Family Rosary Makers, and faithfully supported the church's No Neighbor Left Behind Ministry. Her compassion extended well beyond her own community through her sponsorship of children around the world with Unbound, and she was also a dedicated supporter of Heartbeat, reflecting her lifelong commitment to caring for others. She found joy in reading, working crossword puzzles, and spending time with those she loved most. While she never claimed to have a favorite child, she shared an especially close and treasured bond with her youngest son, Joey.
Mary is survived by her beloved husband, Stanley Byk; her children, Emily Byk and husband Patrick, Katie Hall and husband Richard, Carrin Byk and partner Don, Joey Byk, and daughter-in-law Sara Byk; nine cherished grandchildren; her precious great-granddaughter, Adalynn Grace; her brother, Greg Carol and wife Janice; along with many nieces, nephews, extended family members, and dear friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Gazy and Vivian Carol, and her beloved son, Matthew Byk.
Mary's family finds comfort in knowing that her faith has become sight. She is now reunited with her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, welcomed into the loving embrace of her Heavenly Father, surrounded by the angels, and joyfully reunited with her parents, her beloved son Matthew, and all those who preceded her in faith. While her family will miss her deeply, they rejoice in God's promise of eternal life and imagine the glorious celebration taking place as she is welcomed home.
A Funeral Mass will be held at Holy Family Catholic Church in Grand Blanc 10am on Friday, July 10, 2026. The family will receive friends at the church beginning at 9am until the time of Mass. Father Joseph Krupp officiating.
In accordance with Mary's wishes, memorial contributions may be made to the Holy Family Catholic Church No Neighbor Left Behind Ministry.
