Betty Jean Johnson, age 80, of Durand, Michigan, passed away on August 22, 2026, at her home surrounded by her family.
She was born on February 23, 1946, in Durand, Michigan, the daughter of Kenneth and Delores Brady. Betty grew up in the community she would always call home and graduated from Durand High School. She carried the values of hard work, loyalty, and kindness throughout her life, and those who knew her remember her as a loving, adventurous, and thoughtful woman whose presence brought comfort and warmth to others.
Betty spent her life as the office manager for Gaines Township, where she was known for her dependability, organization, and steady manner. She took pride in doing her work well and in helping others whenever she could. In addition to her work with Gaines Township, she also served as a bartender at the Gaines Tavern, where she enjoyed the friendships and conversations that came with being part of the local community. Betty was a very simple lady who appreciated the little things in life and found joy in familiar routines, good company, and time spent in the places and with the people she loved.
She especially loved being outside and spending time on the porch swing, where she could relax and enjoy the fresh air. Betty had a deep affection for cats and always enjoyed their companionship. She also collected dolls, including Barbie dolls, and made a number of dresses, showing both her creativity and her attention to detail. In her younger years, she was very involved in softball, and that part of her life reflected the energy and spirit she carried with her always. Betty and Ernie loved to camp together, and they shared many happy memories traveling and exploring new places. One of their most memorable adventures was taking Route 66 all the way to the Pacific Ocean, a trip that reflected her adventurous nature and her love of seeing the world. She also enjoyed watching old Western movies, eating out, and spending time doing the things that made life feel full and meaningful.
Betty was known as a great organizer, and she had a remarkable ability to make anything fit in any space. That gift was more than a practical skill, as it reflected the way she brought order, care, and thoughtfulness into every part of her life. Whether she was managing a busy office, arranging a room, or making a home feel comfortable, Betty approached everything with patience and purpose. Her family and friends will remember her not only for what she did, but for the way she did it, with grace, quiet strength, and a genuine heart.
She is survived by her husband of 20 years, Ernie; her sons, Dennis Judson and his wife Jennifer, and Ronald Johnson; and her grandchildren, Nathaniel, Evan, David, and Donovan. She is also survived by many who loved her dearly and will carry her memory forward with gratitude and affection.
Betty was preceded in death by her parents, Kenneth and Delores Brady; her brothers, John, Jerry, and Jim; and her sister, Cheryl. Their memories remained close to her heart throughout her life, and now she is reunited with them in eternal rest.
Betty will be remembered for her loving nature, her adventurous spirit, and her thoughtful way of caring for others. She lived a life rooted in family, community, and simple joys, and she leaves behind a legacy of kindness, strength, and devotion that will continue to be cherished by all who knew and loved her.
Honoring her wishes, a celebration of her life will be announced at a later date. She will be laid to rest in Oakwood Cemetery in Gaines with her family. |
