Herbert was born on March 18, 1930, in Bolivar, Tennessee, to Noah and Sylina Wilbanks. He was a hardworking man who spent 36 years working at General Motors before retiring in 1989. On October 6, 1946, he married the love of his life, Virginia Shoffner. They shared many wonderful years together until her passing in 2020.

Herbert was a man of deep faith who loved the Lord and looked forward to the day he would go home to Heaven. His faith was an important part of who he was, and he loved gospel music, singing, and playing his guitar. He had a beautiful love for people and never met a stranger. His kindness, friendliness, generosity, and tender heart touched countless lives.

Herbert was also a man who believed in taking care of others. He rented out houses and was known for his compassion toward those who were struggling, never wanting to turn someone away because they had fallen behind on rent. He made sure people were cared for and helped wherever he could. His strong work ethic never left him; even at 89 years old, he was still climbing up on a roof to make repairs.

He loved spending time in his garden and took great pride in growing vegetables, from corn and cucumbers to pumpkins and watermelons. He enjoyed the simple things in life and found great joy in being surrounded by the people he loved.

Above all, Herbert loved his family. He was incredibly proud of his children and grandchildren and never missed an opportunity to brag about them. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend. He was known for his great sense of humor, his generous spirit, his hard-working nature, and his ability to make people feel welcome and cared for.

Herbert is survived by his children, Curtis Wilbanks, Terry (Rene) Wilbanks, and Gregory (Nancy) Wilbanks; grandchildren, Pamela (Kenneth) Pennington, Wendy (Eddie) Lopez, Jeremy (Von De Leigh) Wilbanks, Monica (Jason) Matthews, Terry (Kelly) Wilbanks, Tiffany (Zach) Wells, and Jason Wilbanks; many great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren; his brother, Paul (Wilma) Wilbanks; his sister, Vernell Guthrie; as well as many nieces, nephews, extended family members, and friends.

He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Virginia Wilbanks; his parents, Noah and Salina Wilbanks; daughter-in-law, Karen Wilbanks; brothers, Clarence, Clyde, Jerry, Charles, and Alvin Wilbanks; and sisters, Ima Jean Brumley, Geraldine Barclay, and Thelma Brumley.

Herbert’s life was one of hard work, faith, family, music, laughter, and service to others. He spent his life loving people and making sure those around him were cared for. He often spoke about going to Heaven, and after 96 years of a life well lived, he has finally arrived at the place he longed for.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Herbert's name to More Life Tabernacle Church.
