Emery Bennett, of Goodrich, passed away on December 19 at the age of 91. Emery was known for giving back to his community and for his deep care and devotion to his family.

Emery was born on November 1, 1934, in Clarkston to Jennie (Emery) and James Bennett, and had an older sister, Marie. He graduated from Davison High School, and during that time, while attending a square dance, he met the love of his life, Juanita Gage.

Emery was a proud member of the community and a natural networker, working many different jobs throughout his life. He attended trade school to become a Master Electrician. His career began at the Shell gas station in Davison, followed by work as a gravel truck driver.

At the age of 22, he purchased a TV and appliance store in downtown Goodrich and moonlighted as a school bus driver. He later also purchased the hardware store in downtown Goodrich. After 30 years of owning his own businesses, he went on to work for Owen Chevrolet, Village Funeral Home, Ross Ashphalt, and Delta Paving. Throughout his busy work and volunteer years, Emery and Nita traveled across the United States with many families and friends. He was also widely relied upon for his ability to fix just about anything. Emery retired at the age of 82.

Emery was a dedicated volunteer within his community. He was an Atlas Township Firefighter for 43 years, a member of the Goodrich United Methodist Church, Charter Member of the Goodrich Lions Club and the Goodrich Volunteer Ambulance Service, served on the Goodrich School Board and the Atlas Township Board. He also served his country in the United States Army Reserves from 1957 – 1963.

Emery is preceded in death by his parents, Jennie and James Bennett, and his sister, Marie Bell. He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Juanita; his children, John (Lynne Scharmen) Bennett and Beth (Joe) Millerschin; his grandchildren, Kelsey (Dustin) Gamza, Kara (Trent) Vartanian, and Jake Millerschin; and his great-grandchildren, Felicity and Silas Gamza, as well as many extended family members and dear friends who will miss him deeply.

Friends may share their condolences at Goodrich United Methodist Church for visitation on December 26 from 4-8pm. The funeral service will be held at the church on December 27 at 11:00 a.m., with visitation prior beginning at 10:00 am. Burial will follow the funeral service at Evergreen Cemetery in Grand Blanc, and a luncheon will follow at the church.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Goodrich Lions Club, Leader Dogs for the Blind, and the Goodrich United Methodist Church.
