Bruce Marvin Richardson was born on January 20, 1947, in Bessemer, Michigan. Bruce was the beloved son of Marvin and Olga Richardson and brother of Marilyn. He stayed loyal to his upper peninsula roots returning for July 4th celebrations and Speedboy class reunions (Bessemer High School). He continued his education at Michigan State University graduating in 1969. Bruce moved to Flint to begin his lifelong career with the Flint Community Schools, first as a math teacher at Johnson Elementary School. He then spent 20 years as a Community School Director at Summerfield Elementary School, Lowell Middle School, and Southwestern High School. During the summers, Bruce was active with the Flint Olympian Games and CANUSA games including roles as chairman, committee member and director for golf and swimming. After returning to the classroom, Bruce retired in 2004 with 34 years. Through the years, Bruce was recognized around town by his students, and he, in turn, knew exactly when and where he taught them.
Fondly known as “BR,” Bruce loved to be surrounded by family and friends which included summers by his pool, watching and playing golf, mornings at Garrison’s, poker nights, attending his grandchildren’s sporting events and frequent visits to Arizona. Bruce’s true passion was hunting and spending time at the Hilltop Club in northern Michigan. While he enjoyed the cabin year-round, deer season (November 15th ) was coveted as he spent time with loved ones, making memories and reminiscing of years past while telling a story or three.
With his wife Holly, Bruce traveled to Europe including Italy, Portugal and Spain. They developed new interests together such as kayaking and biking. Through Holly, Bruce was introduced to Flint’s music and cultural events, gaining another community of friends. He was involved in Music at St. Paul’s concert series and welcomed visiting musicians into their home. Together, Bruce and Holly hosted an annual fundraising event where BR’s ability to “hold court” was on full display.
Bruce will be deeply missed by his family and all who knew him, but his legacy will continue to live through memories and stories.
Bruce is survived by his wife: Holly Richardson; his children: Ross (Lee) Richardson, Meredith Richardson, Jay (Erin) Richardson, Peter (Courtney) Richardson, Chantal (Austin) Krause, Kent (Torri) Lawrence; and his grandchildren: Taylor, Peyton, Grant, Lillia, Camden, Remington, Rachel, Esther, Keaton, Vivian, and Ezra.
He is preceded in death by his first wife: Mary Richardson; his parents: Marvin and Olga; and his sister: Marilyn Wroblewski.
In recognition of Bruce’s role in fundraising efforts for Music at St. Paul’s concert series, donations can be made to St. Paul’s Episcopal Church: 711 S. Saginaw Street, Flint, Michigan 48502 noting “MIHC for BR.” |
