CHINONIS, Katie. - Of Grand Blanc, age 99, died on Wednesday, September 23, 2026, peacefully at home surrounded by her loving family.
Funeral service will be held 11am Tuesday, September 29, 2026, at Assumption Greek Orthodox Church, 2245 East Baldwin Road, Grand Blanc, Father Peter Bistolaridis officiating.
Burial in Great Lakes National Cemetery.
Contributions may be made to The Greater Flint Orthodox Endowment Fund or Assumption Greek Orthodox Church.
Visitation will be held from 5-8pm on Monday, September 28, 2026, at Swartz Funeral Home, 1225 West Hill Road, Flint. Trisagion service at 7pm Monday at the funeral home.
Katie was born in Detroit, Michigan on July 11, 1927, the daughter of Xenophen and Artemis (Kariotoglou) Karay.
She was a graduate of Detroit Northern High School, member of Assumption Greek Orthodox Church, founding member of Daughters of Penelope, Philoptochos, Past member of Warwick Hills Country Club, and Tea Group. In her earlier years she enjoyed travelling, bowling, baking, cooking, crocheting, watercolor and oil painting, and loved to read.
On November 13, 1949, she married Elias Chinonis in Detroit. She was an active and devoted member of Assumption Greek Orthodox Church.
Surviving are children, Dennis and daughter in law Dr Debra Chinonis, daughter Diane and husband Walter Foraker, granddaughter Nancy Chinonis and husband Jeff Lauster, grandsons Elias Chinonis and Richard Chinonis, brother Andrew Karay and wife Anne, sisters-in-law Linda Chinonis and Sandi Chinonis, several nieces, nephews and godchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents Xenophon and Artemis (Kariotoglou) Karay, husband Elias, brothers Nicholas Karay (Mary) and Alec Karay (Louella), sister Mary Mouzakis (Jim), brothers in law Constantine "Gus" and John whom she raised as sons when they came to America from Greece.
