SUTHERLAND, Lee Edward and Jean Louise (Leonhardt) – of Burton, MI, ages 90 and 82, went to be with the Lord on Wednesday, November 9, 2022 and Saturday, September 26, 2020. Inurnment, with Military Honors, 11 AM Wednesday, December 7, 2022 in Green Corners Cemetery, Hadley, MI; Rev. James Offrink officiating. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Food Bank of Eastern Michigan, www.fbem.org or a charity of one’s choice, in memory of Lee and Jean.
Lee was born in Hadley, MI on September 24, 1932, son of the late Charles and Gladys (Watts) Sutherland. He proudly served his country with the U.S. Army from 1955-1958. He married Jean Louise Leonhardt on June 13, 1959 in Port Huron, MI and she preceded him in death on September 26, 2020. Lee was a co-owner of Calvert Sales in Mount Morris, MI and Pontiac, MI with his business partners Tom Calvert and Bob Calvert. He was a former member of St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church and a current member of Heritage United Church of Christ.
Jean was born in Port Huron, MI on October 20, 1937, daughter of the late Clifford H. and Bessie (Campbell) Leonhardt. She was a former member of St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church and a current member of Heritage United Church of Christ. Jean was a Multi-Media Artist and Docent at the Flint Institute of Arts, a Brownie leader, Red Hat Society Queen and a Volunteer at St. Joseph Hospital.
Lee and Jean are survived by their 2 children, Clifford (William Falu) Sutherland and Diane (Subash) Chander Sutherland; grandson, Rohit “Charlie” Duggal; Jean’s sister, Ann Marie Shayna; Jean’s brother, William (Carole Sue) Leonhard; many other loving family members and dear friends. They were preceded in death by their parents, Charles and Gladys Sutherland and Clifford and Bessie Leonhardt; Jean’s sister, Carol Whittaker; Lee’s 5 siblings, Doris Sutherland, Marge (Tom) Krakker, Ray (Lola) Sutherland, Ruth (Lee) Umpstead and Harold (Dorcas) Sutherland.
The family would like to extend a very sincere thank you to the nurses and staff of Compassus Hospice for their compassionate and professional care of Lee and to the nurses of Mid-Michigan Home Health and Hospice, especially Aubrey, Brandi, Melony, Johnetta, Kathy, Gloria, Clara Rose and Chaplain Marius, for their loving and compassionate care of Jean.
