Born: 11/3/1940
Died: 10/30/2021
Age: 80
Community: Flint, MI

Bragg, James, “J.D.”, of Flint, MI age 80, drew his last breath on October 30, 2021 surrounded by family. If you asked a hundred people who J.D. was, they’d give you a different answer and story. He was born to Hattie and Rev. Emmett Russell, “E.R.”, Bragg in Whitby, West Virginia and was a1958 graduate of Stoco High School in Coal City, West Virginia. J.D. was a SP 4 in the United States Army (Honor Graduate, NCO Academy of Small Arms, Decoration Medals: Expert Rifle M-14, Sharpshooter Rifle, Letter of Commendation, Good Conduct Medal, Member of the Advanced Party that drew equipment for Operation Big Lift in 1963, going to Germany with 2nd Armored Division 78th Artillery). J.D. appreciated a hard day’s work. He was a union painter, a craftsman, a glazer, and an employee of GM Truck and Bus in Pontiac, MI, retiring in 2006. He was a pragmatic man who valued education and providing for his family. He was a Christian man, an avid reader of the Bible from cover to cover, and various other books. In retirement, he enjoyed music and playing his guitars. J.D. was perhaps all these things; but to his family, he was that and more. In our story, he was our beloved Husband, Father, and Grandfather. He was the man we respected and adored. He was the dear man that we will grieve and miss. We will honor him as we move forward with grace, just as he would expect no less.
Surviving J.D. are his devoted and loving wife of 58 years, Elizabeth J. (Smith) Bragg, twin daughters, Jamie Bragg-Lovejoy (son-in-law, Lynn Lovejoy), Elisa Bragg-Haack, and cherished granddaughter, Anna Baker. J.D. also leaves a sister, Violet (Maynard) Crivello, cousins, nieces, nephews, and high school classmates. He was preceded in death by his parents, 3 brothers and 1 sister.
Consistent with J.D.’s wishes, cremation has taken place and a service will be held at Great Lakes National Cemetery in Holly, Michigan on November 18, 2021 at 1 pm for family and friends. Reverend Harold K. Polk Jr. officiating.
In consideration of exceptional care and compassion, the family thanks Dr. Al-Jabban and his office personnel, Dr. Szyarto and team, and Genesys Hospital ICU Nurse, Shelia.
Next to J.D.’s senior yearbook picture was the caption; A good name is rather to be chosen than great riches. J.D. lived his life in this manner. In honor of J.D.’s memory and in lieu of material things, please share kindness toward someone in need. J.D.’s favorite hymn, A Beautiful Life, is how we will cherish and remember this beautiful man…
“The only life that will endure,
is the one that’s kind and good and pure
And so, for God, I’ll take my stand.
Each day I’ll lend a helping hand.”
