James Wilfred Thornton, 76, of Ossineke, passed away at his residence on Thursday Aug. 9, 2018. He will be greatly missed and forever in our hearts.
Jim was born on September 2, 1941 in Flint, Michigan to the late Wilfred and Marcella (McCulley) Thornton. He graduated from Lapeer High School in 1959 and went on to attend Mott College as well as the University of Michigan (Flint).
On November 10, 1962 Jim married the love of his life Barbara Ann (Nail) in Flint, MI. The two enjoyed every minute of every day together and living life to its fullest doing things such as, chatting with friends and family, reading, enjoying music, and spending time with their grandchildren all the way up until Barbara preceded him in death just a few months ago.
Jim was active in many different things. In school he played drums, was a member of the Boy Scouts of America, and became an avid auto enthusiast. Later, he continued with his passion for music by playing the drums professionally. He became a life member of Fellowship 236 Free and Accepted Masons, joined the Bay City Scottish Rite, entered the Order of Eastern Stars, was a member and past president of the Flint Finmen Scuba Diving Club, was a member of the Corunna Area Jaycee’s. He also volunteered for the Corunna Area Ambulance Service, was involved with the Genesee and Shiawassee County Genealogical Societies and volunteered at the Genesee County Clerks Office. Jim Worked at Moore Iron Works in Grand Blanc, MI., was a welder repairman at Fisher Body in Flint, MI., became an electrician at Buick City, then went on to work for General Motors Plant 36 (UAW Local 599) for 40 years until his retirement in 2004.
Jim was a loving husband, father, and grandfather, who shared his love of classic cars, travel, camping, reading, music, treasure hunting, and scuba diving with his family and in turn, supported them in all their interests.
He is survived by his children, Craig (Deborah) Thornton of Owosso, MI., Jeffrey (Staci) Thornton of Ossineke, MI., Amy (Aaron) Meade of Flint, MI., grandchildren, Parker Thornton, Paige Thornton, Addison Thornton, Abraham Meade, his father Norman “Pete” (Barb) Crane of Flint, MI., and sisters, Janet (Lonnie) Campbell of Gaines, MI. and Dedra Lozier of Alpena, MI. Jim is preceded in death by his wife of 55 years Barbara Ann.
