Clara Bell Clough, age 81, of Durand, passed away on April 11, 2026, at Haven of Rest with her family surrounding her.
She was born on February 6, 1945, in Monroe, Michigan, to the late John and Virginia (Cords) Townsend. Clara grew up with strong family values and a warm spirit that stayed with her throughout her life. She attended Durand High School and carried the lessons of her upbringing into the many roles she embraced as a wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, and friend.
On April 14, 1962, Clara married the love of her life, Jon Charles Clough, at the Durand Congregational Church. Their marriage of 63 years was a beautiful example of devotion, partnership, and love. Together they built a life centered on family, faith, and shared memories that will be treasured always. Clara and Jon were blessed with a daughter, Chris Janca, and a son, Mark Clough, who preceded her in death on April 26, 2021. Clara’s family was the heart of her world, and she found her greatest joy in being surrounded by those she loved.
Clara is survived by her husband, Jon; her daughter, Chris and Joe Janca; her grandchildren, Kyle (Haley) Clough, Aymee (Nick) Henne, Joe (Sara) Janca, Brooke (Kate) Burman, Lucy (Dakota) Burke, Ellie (Kyle) White, and Leah (Erik) Birchmeier; and her great-grandchildren, Breslen, Bexley, Crew, Lilah, Kade, Rowen, JP, and baby boy White on the way. She is also survived by her sister, Mary and Dan Cook. In addition to her parents and son Mark, she was preceded in death by her two infant sons, John and Hugh, sister Donna and brother in-law Paul Conrad.
Clara worked at Pleasant View as an aide, where her caring nature and gentle presence were deeply appreciated. Later, she returned to school and earned a cosmetology degree, beginning a long career doing hair for many years. She took pride in her work and enjoyed the relationships she formed with the people she served. Clara had a gift for making others feel comfortable and cared for, and her kindness was evident in every part of her life.
Music was one of Clara’s lifelong joys, and she loved being part of a bowling league for many years. She also enjoyed dancing, playing golf, and spending time in Arizona. She especially loved her two dogs and found happiness in the simple pleasures of life, including playing Rummikub, shopping, and getting her hair and nails done. Most of all, she cherished time with her family, and those moments brought her the greatest contentment. Clara was known for being loving, kind, and gentle, and she also had a little sass that made her personality even more memorable and endearing.
She lived with grace, strength, and compassion, and she touched the lives of many with her steady presence and caring heart. Her family and friends will remember her for the love she gave so freely, the laughter she shared, and the warmth she brought into every room. Clara’s legacy lives on in the family she helped shape, the memories she created, and the example of love and devotion she leaves behind.
Funeral service to honor and celebrate her life will be held at 11:00am on Wednesday, April 15, 2026 at Watkins Brothers Funeral Homes, 501 N.
