Philip John Baldwin, born on January 22, 1938, in Durand, Michigan, stepped into his Heavenly Home on July 8, 2025, at the age of 87.
He was the devoted husband of Eunice Joyce (Freeman) Baldwin. Phil was an amazing man of God, beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and friend.
Phil’s childhood in Durand left him with a love for the sights and sounds of steam locomotives, while his engineering training through General Motors Institute allowed a lengthy and fulfilling career with GM in Flint, MI. Known for spontaneously breaking into songs like “This Is the Day That the Lord Has Made,” Phil blessed everyone he knew with his joy and enthusiasm for God’s Word.
His bright blue eyes often brimmed with tears as he listened to, encouraged, and prayed for friends and family. The Phil that everyone knew in public was the exact same man in private. Full of Love, Joy, Peace, Patience, Kindness, Goodness, Faithfulness, Gentleness, and Self- Control, He set an amazing example for all.
Phil was looking forward to meeting Jesus’ face to face, and although we already miss him terribly, we rejoice that though he is absent in the body, he is present with the Lord whom he loves. As much as Phil was thrilled to hear the lonely, haunting sound of the magnificent train engine’s whistle, he longed even more to hear the voice of his Lord say, “Well done, my good and faithful servant.” The true patriarch of his family, loved and respected by his wife, children, grandchildren, extended family, and friends.
Phil is survived by his wife Eunice, children Tim and Pony from Birch Run, MI, Julie and Jeff Cushman from Flushing, MI, and David and Mary from Milford, MI. His family legacy also includes his grandchildren: Price and Joey Baldwin, Jonathan and Jennifer Baldwin, Tralene and Luke Devine, Traci and Zach Coston, Noah and Bella Baldwin, Nehemiah and Emily Baldwin, Mercy and Scott Smith, Merriam Baldwin, Elise Baldwin, Elam Baldwin, Ben and Hannah Cushman, Brielle Cushman (engaged to John McCarthy), Grace Baldwin, and Jane Baldwin. Phil’s great-grandchildren include Corran, Soren, Alaythia, Kairi, Oliver, Caffrey, Lyric, Rose, and Baron.
