Grover Douglas "Doug" was the fifth of seven children born to the union of Pete and Selma Douglas. Both of his parents and three siblings, (Pearl, Bernard, and Baby Girl Douglas) preceded him in death.

Funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, February 21, 2025 at the Swartz Funeral Home, 1225 West Hill Road.

Entombment at Flint Memorial Park.

Visitation 10 a.m. Friday until the time of the service at the funeral home.

A student of Detroit Public Schools, he attended Sherrill Elementary School and graduated from Chadsey High School. Grover accepted Christ and was baptized at an early age at the Berea Lutheran Church in Detroit.

When asked why he enlisted in the Army, Grover explained “you only had two choices back then – military or the plant. And the plants weren't hiring. (He served from 1961 to 1964.) In 1962, while stationed at Fort Bragg, Grover participated in a civil rights march. They marched down the street. Grover remembered, “They turned the dogs on us. Cars almost ran us over. We Won because McNamara said if the south didn’t desegregate, he would make them off limits. That was my first civil rights victory!”

In 1966, Grover wed Frances Mattic. To this union Damon, Kenyatta, and Dedan were born.

In 1964, Grover started working at Dodge Main. During that time, 1968, he founded DRUM* (Dodge Revolutionary Union Movement) with 3 of his coworkers: General Gordon Baker, Jr., Ronnie March & Mitch (last name unknown).

During a brief layoff, he learned to create ceramics. He converted his creations into various household accessories. He was very talented.

Grover was given an opportunity to resume his employment by relocating to Flint. He retired from Buick City, Factory 81, as a Machine Repairman. He was one of the first black men to hold that title.
His desire to serve and make a difference led to his election as the Vice President of the Retiree’s Chapter of Local 599, a position he held until his passing. In that capacity, he provided service to other members by sharing news on their Facebook page.

Doug married Shurlean Blount on April 8, 1997, and was blessed with two “bonus” children, Jermaine and Monica.

In his retirement, Doug continued to enjoy fishing and bowling. However, he was most appreciated by his family because he had taken on the responsibility of Family Historian.

Grover leaves to cherish his memory, his wife, Shurlean Blount; Children, Damon Douglas, Kenyatta Douglas, Dedan Douglas, Jermaine Blount, and Monica Blount; grandchildren, Nicole Douglas, Donald Douglas, Devin Douglas, Arianna McMiller, Skyye McMiller, and Croix McMiller; siblings, Johnie Levora, Pete, Jr. (Kathleen), and Mack (Teresa); a brother-in-law, Derrick Blount; and a host of other grandchildren, great grandchildren, family and friends.
