COATES, Joanne M.-Age 96, of Flint, passed away Saturday, November 22, 2025, at Serene Gardens in Grand Blanc. Joanne was born August 31, 1929, the daughter of Otto and Esther Parsons and was raised in Big Rapids alongside her brother, Bruce (Jean) Parsons. Joanne was a proud Michigan State University alumna where she received her master’s degree in social work, participated in several clubs and played clarinet in the marching band. She moved to Flint shortly after receiving her undergraduate degree and met William Joseph Coates, her loving husband of 57 years. Joanne served as a social worker for Flint Public Schools, proudly caring for thousands of children and families, and was also on the Michigan Association of School Social Workers board. Joanne was an active member of Court Street United Methodist Church and tirelessly served on the United Methodist Women’s group, providing meals and volunteering for those in need. Joanne enjoyed traveling around the world with Biil and spending time with family and friends at their cottage in Sand Point and chalet at Schuss Mountain. Her greatest source of pride was her loving family. She is survived by her sons, Steven A. Coates, Jeffrey Stuart (Heidi) Coates, and Brian Joseph (Tracy) Coates—as well as grandchildren Zachary Stuart, Joshua Shea, Brandy Lee, Amanda Lynn (Shane) Collins, Brandon Joseph (Becca) Coates, and Antonio Coates. Her legacy also includes great-grandchildren Mariah, Elysia, Sawyer, Kolton, Kade, and Erin and several cherished nieces and nephews.
The family extends its deepest gratitude to Serene Gardens’ staff and Heart to Heart Hospice for their dedicated care and support.
Visitation will be held on Friday November 28, 2025, at 12 noon followed by the service at 1 p.m. at Swartz Funeral Home 1225 West Hill Road, Flint, Dr. Max B. Hayden officiating. Burial will follow at Gracelawn Cemetery. The family requests In lieu of flowers contributions be made to Court Street United Methodist Church.
