Smith, Amelia Frances of Flushing, age 89, died Saturday, June 13, 2026, at Haven of Rest (Hospice House of Shiawassee County). A memorial service will be held at a later date. If desired, memorial contributions may be made to Haven of Rest or Alzheimer’s Association for Alzheimer’s and dementia awareness.

Amelia was born in Flint, Michigan on September 10, 1936, the second of five children to Clinton and Alice (Cobb) Powell. She married Gerald Smith on March 29, 1958, in Elwood, Illinois, and they lived in Flushing for the majority of their married life. Amelia spent most of her career in Flushing at Luce Pharmacy, then Rite Aid, and retired from the Meijer Party Store.

Over the years, Amelia volunteered as a Girl Scout Leader. She was a lifelong member of the Girl Scouts Council and was very active in the Goodwill Doll Derby (dolls dressed by Girl Scouts) in the 1970’s and 1980’s. She enjoyed genealogy, after her daughter took a genealogy class in high school and later discovered that they were distantly related to the baseball player, Ty Cobb and singer, Johnny Cash. Amelia was a HAM-10 Meter Radio Operator -KC8VRT, for many years. Along with her husband and other relatives, they enjoyed playing Euchre and later with her husband and grandchildren, they enjoyed Rummy and Go Fish. She enjoyed gardening and feeding the native birds. She also had several beloved cats over the years.

Amelia is survived by her son, Brian Smith (Lisa Shoans); daughter, Frances (Robert Garrow) Smith; grandchildren, Jared, Robert, Devin, Camrin; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; four siblings, Virginia Hibner, Patricia Clark, David Powell, Cecilia Reed; and several aunts, uncles and cousins.
