On August 25, 1934, Genevia Davis was born in Patrick County, Ararat Virginia to the proud parents of Charlie and Nora Hairston. Genevia attended Clark Creek Elementary School, later attending school at J.J. Jones high School in Mt. Airy, NC. In the fall of 1952, Genevia’s senior year, she attended the newly built high school inn Stuart, Virginia named Patrick Central. That school year Genevia was honored as “Miss Patrick Central” and graduated in 1953 as salutatorian, then Genevia worked as a secretary at Patrick Central High for one year after graduation. In 1955, Genevia relocated to Flint, MI, where she attended Macedonia Missionary Baptist Church, later joining the same year under the leadership of the late Rev. Ira Watkins. She later became a valued member of Macedonia’s Melody Choir. Being the hard worker that she was, Genevia decided to attend the Mott Adult Education Program and took adult enrichment classes such as hat making, arts and crafts and flower arranging. Enjoying the hat making so much, Genevia attended and graduated from H&M School of Millinery in Detroit, MI in 1973 and later taught classes at Mott College; millinery is the designing and manufacture of hats. In 1960, Genevia was hired at Hurley Medical Center and continued making hats. In 1974 she opened a millinery retail store which was located at 4439 N. Saginaw St., Flint, MI. She sold hat supplies and all needs for hat making all while continuing to teach millinery classes. Genevia was the first black milliner to operate in the Flint area.

In the early 80’s she attended, graduated and received her real estate license from Gatewood Realty and worked for a period of time. Recognizing Genevia’s hospital background, the late Rev. JC Curry encouraged Genevia to organize a health team at Macedonia Missionary Baptist Church. Genevia and a team of church member nurses organized and held classes on healthcare. She also helped organize health fairs with sister Evon Lewis.

Genevia spearheaded along with help from other church members on opening Macedonia’s Nurses room 3 days a week to assist with the congregations healthcare and other needs, or direct parishioners to the proper place to get the needed care. In 1987, Genevia retired from Hurley Medical Center after 33 years of dedicated service as a senior nurse assistant and medical transcriber. Since retirement Genevia worked with G-Card, the voluntary police program, the Yes Program, President of Suburban Gardens Block Club and member of the resource center (a volunteer agency). Genevia geared up and led a walking team and for a few years she was the van driver for Macedonia Missionary Baptist Church. She loved playing softball for Hurley Medical Center, Wonderland Travel and Macedonia Missionary Baptist Church as well as bowling. Further continuing her community outreach, she operated a group home and volunteered at Hasselbrinks Center teaching arts and crafts. She also did neighborhood patrol in her neighborhood with Safe Passage. Genevia worked with the Wolverine State Nurses, The Great Lakes District Nurses, the president of Macedonia Nurse’s Guild since 1981, was on the Macedonia Security team (secretary) a member of Sunday School and continues to sing with Macedonia’s senior choir. Genevia will be remembered as a trail blazer, a nurturer of mind and spirit and a woman who’s life’s work leaves and enduring impact on all who knew her.
