ETHEL M. (VANWAGONER) STILES, age 92 of Lapeer, formerly of Otter Lake, went to be with the Lord on Thursday, January 1, 2015 in the loving care of the assisted living home, A Family Affair. Her funeral service will be held at 11AM on Monday, January 5, 2015 at the Mumford–Hudson Funeral Home in Otisville, with Pastor Kay Leitelt officiating. Burial will follow in Watertown Twp. Cemetery. Visitation will be from 2-5PM on Sunday, January 4, 2015 at the funeral home. Ethel was born on August 22, 1922 in Flint Township to LaVern A. VanWagoner and Amanda S. (Beavnier) VanWagoner. She married Wilber Stiles on January 5, 1946. She later married Vincent Sagnelli on May 24, 1986. Ethel was a member of the United Methodist Church of Fostoria. She was initiated on March 7, 1961 into the Olive Branch Rebekah Lodge #120 and was a member for 53 years. She served as Past Noble Grand and was given the decoration of chivalry, May 17, 2000, which is the highest award given to a member of the Rebekah’s. She was also a life member (50 yrs.) of Nourmahal Chapter #282, Order of the Eastern Star. Ethel was a woman with a servant heart. She volunteered wherever and whenever she was given the opportunity. She enjoyed spending time with her family and friends, playing cards, crocheting, sewing, needlepoint, knitting, and crafts. She was loved by many.
Ethel is survived by her daughter, Sondra (Don) Kessler; stepchildren: Rebecca Sagnelli, Michael Sagnelli, and Sharon (John) Murphy; grandchildren: Jodie (Ed) Holtsberry, Shawn Johnson, Scott (Heather) Johnson, Chad Kessler and Amy (Kurt) Cooper; step-grandchildren: Justin, James, and Mary; great- grandchildren: Joseph, Nicholas, Owen, Tessa, Kayla, and Jordin; great-great-granddaughter, Harlow; sister, Lois Morgan of MI; brothers: Ward VanWagoner of WI, Neil VanWagoner of FL, Clyde (Helga) VanWagoner of MI, and Dale (Linda) VanWagoner of MI; and many nieces and nephews. Ethel was preceded in death by her husband of 34 years, Wilber Stiles; daughter, Charlene (Pat) Johnson; second husband, Vincent Sagnelli; parents, LaVern and Amanda VanWagoner; sisters, Mildred (Gordon) Boehmer, Lorraine (Frank) Sheridan, and Alma Joyce (Al) Ewert; brothers: Elroy (Maxine) VanWagoner, Eugene (Joyce) VanWagoner, and Wayne (Martha) VanWagoner.
She requested any donations in her memory to be given to the United Methodist Church of Fostoria, Olive Branch Rebekah Lodge #120, or the Nourmahal Chapter #282, Order of the Eastern Star, Otisville, MI. The family would like to thank: Cora and Tyler from Hometown Hospice and Anitra, Lynn, and Mary from A Family Affair for the loving care of their mother, grandmother, and sister, Ethel. Also, the many loving friends who came to visit her.
