Potkan, Helen of Flushing, age 90, died Tuesday, November 30, 2021, at the Lodge at Taylor Nursing Home. Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Saturday, December 4, 2021, at Rossell Funeral Home. Pastor Sarah LaRose-Nettell will officiate. Burial will follow at New Calvary Catholic Cemetery. Visitation will be 3-7 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.
Helen was born in Slovakia on April 3, 1931, the daughter of Coleman and Frantiska Medo. She immigrated to the United States in the early 1950’s. Helen married Felix Potkan and together they spent 45 wonderful years of marriage. She enjoyed crocheting and passing her homemade gifts to others. Helen also enjoyed flower gardening, travel, cooking, and baking her traditional Slovak foods. More than anything, she adored her grandchildren and great-grandchildren and her face would light up every time she would see them.
Helen is survived by her daughter, Paulina Hesliger and fiance, Brian Faitel; son-in-law, Ronald Newburn; grandchildren, Natasha and husband Travis Hussey, Vesta and husband Daniel Meissner; great-grandchildren, Violet Armbruster, Dominic Armbruster, Jaelynn Hussey, Landry Hussey, Maxton Hussey, Dawson Meissner; and dear family friend, Barbara Blanton. She was preceded in death by her husband, Felix; daughter, Helen Newburn; grandson, Christopher Newburn; and brother, Adolf Medo.
