James Edward Straley, age 90, passed peacefully in his home in Petoskey, MI. on April 11, 2025. He was born January 18, 1935 in Flint, MI to parents Herbert and Etta (Hale) Straley. He spent the majority of his life in Flushing, MI and retired to Boyne City, MI and Petoskey, MI in his later years. He was educated at Flint Northern High School and the University of Michigan where he earned a Doctor of Dental Surgery degree in 1959.
Shortly after graduating from dental school, Jim married the love of his life, Suzanne L. Strahle, a marriage that spanned 61 years. Soon after, he enlisted in the U.S. Army. He served in Germany as an Army Dentist (rank of Captain) and eventually returned to Michigan where he & Sue raised their family of two sons (James, Jr., Jeffrey) and one daughter (Jennifer). Dr. Straley owned and operated a general dentistry practice, Flushing Dental Associates, in downtown Flushing for 45 years, 1961-2006. He was later joined in this practice by son Jeffrey and in his retirement years he practiced in Boyne City with daughter Jennifer.
He was preceded in death by his beloved wife Suzanne; his son Jim, Jr.; his parents Herbert and Etta; and his brother Herbert, Jr.
Jim is survived by his son Jeffrey (Rhonda) Straley of Flushing; daughter Jennifer Larson of Charlevoix; sister Margaret Straley of Flushing; and three granddaughters Lauren (Michael) Keller of Durham, NC, Juliyana (Ben) Fridline of Chicago, IL and Aeryn Larson of Charlevoix, MI.
In both his personal and professional life, Jim was known as a man of kindness & integrity. He was an avid outdoorsman and particularly loved sailing, golfing, skiing and hunting. His impact on the lives of those he touched will remain ever present. His charming sense of humor, love and devotion to his family and friends will never be forgotten.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday June 7, 2025, at 1:00 PM at the Petoskey United Methodist Church in Petoskey, MI. Visitation will begin at 12:00 PM.
Arrangements are in the care of Stackus Funeral Home.
