PLUMB, Douglas Robert - Of Grand Blanc, age 78, surrounded by his loving family, passed away Tuesday, March 25, 2014 at Genesys Regional Medical Center after a short battle with cancer. Funeral service will be held 11 am Saturday, March 29, 2014 at the Swartz Funeral Home, 1225 West Hill Road, Flint, Pastor Paul Ytterock officiating. Burial in Evergreen Cemetery. Contributions may be made in Doug’s memory to the Young Life of Genesee County. Visitation 2-8pm Friday at the funeral home. Doug was born in Flint on July 19, 1935 and was a resident of the Grand Blanc area since 1966. Doug worked at Buick for 38 years and retired in 1992. His first job at Buick was a Claims Adjuster Clerk in the Service Department in 1954. He worked his way into the Accounting Department where he had his educational background. While in the Accounting Department he worked as a clerk who processed the paperwork through to the State of Michigan to plate company vehicles for the company car drivers. From there he moved to the section where all new cars were invoiced to the dealerships throughout the country. While he was in this area, he was promoted to Supervisor of the Billing and Sales Accounting Department. In `1974, he was promoted to and Administrator for the Office Service Department. This was to handle all the mail for Buick wide both in and out, the Print Room for Buick and service the needs for stationary supplies. He also had the responsibility to oversee the telephone switchboard for General Motors full Flint area plants. During this same time, Doug was working a second job as basketball referee for the YMCA and the Michigan High School Association as well as an Umpire for the YMCA church league. He did work for Robert Hall Clothing Store as well as Federals Department Store. In 1982, Doug was transferred to the Central Hourly Payroll Division, which was in the Buick main building at the time. Shortly after he transferred they were required to move out of Buick area and a separate building was to be built and leased by this group. He was given the responsibility at that time to get with the builder and assist with what our needs were and worked with them. After the building was completed, Doug set up all new office desk areas for the group to be moved to our new location. He setup the move and had it completed in one weekend. As we became settled Doug was given the position as Administrative Assistant to the Director of Central Payroll Division. Doug also worked at Swartz Funeral Home for many years. Doug grew up in the Salvation Army and a member of the band and choir. He has been in music all his life and was Music Director for the Grand Blanc Methodist Church in the 1960s. He was an active member of First Presbyterian Church, serving as a Deacon, Trustee and sang in the Men’s Choir and the Chancel Choir. Doug was very active with the Junior Achievement program in Genesee County. He was on the board for the Young Life program of Genesee County. He was also an Honorary Grandparent to many children at Kearsley Elementary. Surviving are wife of 58 years, Sharon; son, Michael (Deborah) Plumb of Holt; daughters, Kimberly (Jamie) Shaaia of Sterling Heights and Pamela (Gilbert) Moorman of Grand Blanc; four grandchildren and five great-grandchildren, sister, Kay of California; sisters-in-law, Ellen and Peggy; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers. The family would like to give special thanks to Joseph Hubler, R.N. of the Cardiac Care Unit for his honesty and sincerity towards Doug and his family.
