Robert Orin Burtis, a cherished father, uncle, and friend, passed away peacefully at his home in Owosso, Michigan, on December 26, 2023, at the age of 97. Born on February 8, 1926, in Owosso, to the late John Henry and Madge (Staton) Burtis, Robert's life was marked by his intelligence, handiness, and a warm, engaging spirit that touched all who knew him.
Robert graduated from Owosso High School in the class of 1945 and continued his education at the General Motors Institute (GMI), where he honed his skills as a design engineer. His love for music led him to attend Mott Community College on a music scholarship. Robert's professional journey was diverse and accomplished; he retired as a Design Engineer for Universal Electric in 1991, had previously worked for Byerleys Bakery, and was the entrepreneurial spirit behind Hyteck, a company that produced tools and dies.
Family was the cornerstone of Robert's life. He is survived by his son, Rodney (Teri) Burtis, his daughter Renae Burtis, and many nieces and nephews. His sister, Dolores Overpack, and his parents preceded him in death.
Robert's interests and hobbies painted the picture of a man who loved life and the outdoors. He was a dedicated hobby farmer, a beekeeper, and a cultivator of delicious raspberries. His leadership as a Boy Scout Troop leader for seven years reflected his commitment to community and youth. Robert's creativity shone through in the snowshoes, sleds, and hitches he crafted alongside his son Rodney.
An avid traveler, Robert explored the United States with the Starcraft Camper Club and enjoyed winters in Florida. His enthusiasm for NASCAR racing, playing the steel guitar, and dancing showcased his vibrant and active nature. A collector at heart, he treasured John Deere tractors and frequented the Old Gas Tractor show in Oakley.
