EDGCOMBE, ROBERT E. (Bob), age 80, died December 23, 2014 at Genesys Regional Medical Center, Grand Blanc, MI. Memorial Services will be 2:00 P.M. Tuesday, December 30, 2014 at the Hill Funeral Home, 11723 S. Saginaw St., Grand Blanc, MI. Pastor James Offrink officiating. Family will receive visitors Tuesday from Noon to 2:00 P.M. Bob was born December 19, 1934 in Flushing, MI to parents (Richard) Keith Edgcombe and (Leona) Becky Edgcombe. Bob graduated from Mary Crapo H.S. (Swartz Creek) in 1954. He attended Michigan Tech University from 1954-1956. In 1957 he left college to enlist in the US Marine Corp where he served from 1957 to 1960. After leaving the Marines he returned to Central Michigan University from 1960-1962 and graduated with a Bachelor’s of Science in Mathematics. After graduation he went to work at the new Buick Motor Division Headquarters in 1963 in Flint, MI as part of their first Computer & Information Technology group. In the mid 1960’s he accepted a position as an original teacher at the new Genesee Area Skill Center in the subject of Data Processing. He remained a teacher at the Skill Center for the rest of his career earning a Master’s Degree in Education from Eastern Michigan University in the early 1980’s and retiring in the mid 1990’s. Bob was very active with the Boy Scouts of America’s Tall Pine Council and many local BSA Units. He was honored with Scouting's Silver Beaver Award in 1982. Around 1965 he was a founder of Pack 175 and served as their first Cubmaster. In 1968 he was a founder and original Assistant Scoutmaster for Troop 368 sponsored by the First Congregational United Church of Christ. In 1975 he was again the founder of and first Cubmaster for Pack 176. All three units continue to operate and thrive today in Grand Blanc. He was also very active with the Tall Pine Council’s Prevailing Winds II sailing training vessel. As an original committee member he assisted with the vessel construction and program launch in 1970 and chaperoned the maiden voyage of the vessel with a crew of 16 high school aged young men and women aboard. Later in the 70’s he earned a 100 Ton Master/Mate license from the United States Coast Guard so he could serve as a licensed Captain aboard the Prevailing Winds which he continued to do until the vessel was retired in 2006. Over 10,000 youth and adults from across Michigan and the United States sailed with the program during its operation. He was a 50+ year member of the First Congregational United Church of Christ in Grand Blanc. He and his wife Ann were married in the Church in 1964 while the Church was still located on Grand Blanc road in the building that now hosts the Grand Blanc Heritage Museum. Over the years he has been a Deacon and chairman of the Deaconate, serving on many committees. Surviving are wife Ann Edgcombe; son Stephen Edgcombe, son David Edgcombe, son and daughter-in-law Rob & Stacy Edgcombe; grandson Cole Edgcombe, granddaughter Samantha Edgcombe, granddaughter Helen Denise Edgcombe; 3 great grandchildren; Sister & Brother-In-Law Delores and Jim Markee; Nephews Scott and Rick Markee; many cousins around the Flint Area and the world. Preceded in death by Keith and Becky Edgcombe; daughter in law Shawn (Steve) Edgcombe. In lieu of flowers the family requests contributions to the BSA’s Great Lakes Sailing Adventure. Please make checks payable to Michigan Crossroads Council and mail to 507 W. Atherton Road, Flint, MI 48507. Please include a note or enter GLSA – Bob Edgcombe in the memo line of the check.
