MIKULICH, John R. – of Davison, age 91, passed away March 19, 2012 at his residence. Cremation has taken place. A Memorial Service will be held 11:00 a.m. Monday, April 2, 2012 at the Flint Elks Club, 7177 E. Maple Ave., Grand Blanc. Inurnment of cremains, with Military Honors, will follow in Great Lakes National Cemetery. The family will welcome visitors one hour prior to the service at the Elks Club. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Flint Elks #222 or a charity of one’s choice.
John was born in Munising, MI on February 13, 1921, son of the late Louis and Frances (Bartol) Mikulich. He was a member of the “greatest generation”, growing up in the Depression with eight siblings working in the family’s general store in the small Slovenian immigrant village of Traunik, MI. After graduating from the University of Michigan in 1943, John proudly served his country in the U.S. Air Corps as a radar operator on the B-29s. He was credited with 34 missions over Japanese held territory and awarded various air medals including the Distinguished Flying Cross. John married Grace Rumph, his wife of 65 years, on June 29, 1946. John lived his life based on personal integrity, belief in the value of hard work and love for his family, community and country. He retired from the Bentley Schools after 36 years of service as an educator, coach and Athletic Director. The John R. Mikulich Athletic Complex was named in honor of his hard work and dedication to the school district, athletics and sportsmanship. John served on the Burton City Council for 11 years. He was a member of the Flint Elks #222, 40th Bomb Group, American Legion and the MEA.
John is survived by his wife, Grace; children, Jane Warren and Tom (Sandy) Mikulich; grandchildren, Corey (Andreas) Quintus, David Warren; great-grandchildren, Sonora and Rose; sisters, Ethel Hebbard, Patricia Finnegan; brother, Robert L. (Fran) Mikulich; sisters-in-law, Genevieve Barhitte, Helen Herrick; many nieces, nephews, cousins and dear friends. He was preceded in death by siblings, Mary, Gladys, Alice, Louis and William.
