VANDERFORD, Ben Dewey – Of Burton, age 86, died Thursday, August 18, 2011. Funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Tuesday, August 23, 2011 at Fenton Road Baptist Church, G-4386 Fenton Road, Flint, Pastor Michael J. Stallard officiating. Private burial in Crestwood Cemetery with a military graveside service under the auspices of the Marine Corps League Flint Detachment #155 Honor Guard. The family requests NO FLOWERS, daughter is allergic to them. In lieu of flowers, please make contributions to Fenton Road Baptist Church or Genesys Hospice. Visitation 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. and 4-8 p.m. Monday at the Swartz Funeral Home, 1225 West Hill Road. A Masonic Service will be conducted by the Grand Blanc Lodge #571, F.&A.M. at 7 p.m. Monday at the funeral home. Mr. Vanderford will be at the church Tuesday from 10 a.m. Tuesday until the time of the service. Ben Dewey Vanderford was born on January 16, 1925 in Lockhart, South Carolina. He moved to Flint from South Carolina in the 1940's and lived the rest of his life in the Flint area. He was a member of Fenton Road Baptist Church, an active member of the Hurley Health & Fitness Center, the Masons (Grand Blanc Lodge #571, F.&A.M.), a lifetime member and former Vice-Chair of the Retiree Chapter Local #659 and Regional 1C board. Ben was a U.A.W. man through and through. Mr. Vanderford was a member of the US Bowling Association and a Special Deputy with the Genesee County Sheriff Department. Ben loved hunting and fishing, loved going on casino trips, he was a MSU fan and he loved attending Darlington car races. Mr. Vanderford was really proud of participating in the wheat harvest out West in the 1940's. Mr. Vanderford was the recipient of the Walter P. Reuther Distinguished Service Award.
In spite of losing two fingers as a teenager, he served in World War II in the Army Air Corps and the National Guard and went on to spend 45 1/2 years as a millwright before retiring. Ben Vanderford was a good provider and loved his family very much. Surviving are daughter, Sharon and Earl Gilpin; sons, Ken (Kim) Vanderford, Dave (MaryAnn) Vanderford and Steve (Scottie) Vanderford; grandchildren, Jason V., Kristen V., Tammy F.,
Tori M., Tina M. and Jason K.; numerous great-grandchildren; sisters and brother, Sally Horne, Earl (Laura) Vanderford and Mertice (Doc) Young;
numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. Mr. Vanderford was preceded in death by Mary Vinette; his parents, Ben Perrin and Ruth (Cudd) Vanderford; several brothers and sisters. Special thanks to the Local #659 Retirees Chapter. Special thanks to Fenton Road Baptist Church and Genesys Hospice.
