Educated locally, Patrick graduated from Clio High School in 1962. Shortly after graduating from high school, Patrick began working for General Motors as a pipefitter apprentice. On July 6, 1964, Patrick heeded the call of duty and enlisted in the United States Air Force until his honorable discharge on July 5, 1968. Upon returning to civilian life, Patrick returned to General Motors and worked as a master pipefitter until his well-earned retirement in the late 1990s.
