Russell, Donald J. – of Montrose, age 92, died Monday, September 9, 2019, at his residence. A memorial service will be held at 11:00 AM, Monday, September 16, 2019, at the Montrose United Methodist Church – 158 E. State St. in Montrose. Pastor Hal Phillips will officiate. The family will receive visitors at the church on Monday from 10 AM until the time of the service at 11 AM. A fellowship luncheon will follow immediately. Memorial contributions may be made to the Montrose United Methodist Church, the Montrose Historical and Telephone Museum, or Residential Hospice.
Don was born December 8, 1926, in Ann Arbor, Michigan to the late Moody and Carrie (Smith) Russell. He was a lifetime resident of Montrose. Don was a U.S. Army veteran. He married Fernmarie Short on June 5, 1950 in Flint, Michigan. Don was the former President of Montrose State Bank, retiring in 1992 with over 45 years of service. He was a member of the Montrose United Methodist Church, the Montrose Historical and Telephone Museum, and a 70-year member of the Norton Male Chorus. He was also a former member of the Michigan Bankers Association and the Michigan Hospice Association. Don was also a former 4-H leader. He loved woodworking, sailing, and travel.
Surviving are: Wife, Fernmarie; 3 children: Diane (John) VonderHaar of St. Joseph, MI., Jeffery (Kathy) Russell of Portage, MI., and Rodrick Russell of Acme; 3 grandchildren: Aaron VonderHaar of San Francisco, CA., Austin VonderHaar of Chicago, and Megan (David) Comer of Portage; Great-grandson, Lincoln Comer.
