Died: 4/1/2024
Age: 78
Community: Vernon, MI

William Leslie Smith, known affectionately as Bill, passed away peacefully in the comfort of his home surrounded by his loving family on April 1, 2024, at the age of 78. Born on September 28, 1945, in Durand, Michigan, he was the cherished son of the late Jack Rothaar and Elizabeth Jane (Erckenbeck) Smith.

Bill was a proud alumnus of Durand High School's class of 1963. He graduated with a bachelor degree from Central Michigan University and was also a valued member of the men's gymnastics team.

Beyond his short career in education, Bill was a respected businessman, owning and operating Blackmore-Rowe Insurance for three decades. His strong work ethic and magnetic personality were evident not only in his professional pursuits but also in his personal life. Bill's warm spirit and innate ability to connect with children were particularly noteworthy, with children naturally gravitating towards him. He was blessed with a beautiful family, including his devoted wife, Karen, whom he married in his hometown of Durand. Together, they nurtured a family that brought him immense pride—his children, Stephanie (Jason) Cleveland and Jason (Julie) Eddy, and his beloved grandchildren, Nicholas (Shelly) Boyer, Marisa Boyer, Chandler Cleveland, Fred Domen, Phoebe Domen, and Grantham Eddy. He also cherished his role as a great-grandfather to Serenity, Trey, Jaykub, and Hazel Boyer also several nephews, great nephews, and great nieces. Bill's dedication to family was the cornerstone of his life, loving every moment with his family by his side.

His siblings, brother, Jack (Cherrie) Smith and sister, Jill Saxton, will hold dearly to their memories of Bill, as they continue to honor his legacy. He was predeceased by his parents and his brother, Ralph Smith.

Bill was a man of diverse interests and involvements. He was the past President of the Owosso Country Club, where his passion for golf shone brightly. His commitment to community was further demonstrated as a founding member of the Durand Rotary, contributing to the well-being of his community with every service. Bill's love for his cabin and boat in Boyne City, along with his enthusiasm for downhill skiing and snowmobiling, underlined his appreciation for nature and outdoor adventures. The winters found him basking in the warmth of Venice, Florida, enjoying a well-earned break from the Michigan cold.

An artisan at heart, Bill relished time spent woodworking, crafting pieces that were not only functional but imbued with his attention to detail and love. His thoughtful, loving nature was woven into every facet of his life—whether he was navigating the fairways of the golf course, engaging in Rotary projects, or simply spending time with his cherished grandchildren.

We remember Bill as a pillar of generosity. His impact was felt far and wide, from the classroom to the insurance business, and in the many lives he touched through his community service and personal passions.
