Gerald "Jerry" Baumann

Born: 12/31/1940
Died: 5/30/2023
Age: 82
Community: Flushing , MI

Baumann, Gerald (“Jerry”) John of Flushing, age 82, died Tuesday, May 30, 2023, at Ascension Genesys. Gerald was soft-spoken, easy-going, and funny. His dry humor often presented as seriousness at first, but his delight in a joke or witty remark always shined through in the twinkle in his eye. Throughout his life he enjoyed hunting, fishing, camping, traveling, watching sports, playing cards, doing puzzles, and spending time with family and friends. Above all else in his life, Gerald was a devoted husband, father and grandfather who always provided support to his family.

Gerald was born on December 31, 1940, in Remus, Michigan, the son of Albert and Helen (Greyczk) Baumann. During his high school years, he helped on his Uncle Archie’s farm as a farm hand. He graduated from Remus High School in 1959. He enlisted in the U.S. Army and was stationed in Germany for the duration of his service. Upon his return to the U.S., he started his career in the foundry in Flint, Michigan and worked in Plant 81 through his retirement in 2006. Gerald took pride in his 40+ years of work for the General Motors Corporation-Buick and was an active member of UAW Local 599. He always strived to improve the effectiveness and efficiency of operations with his ideas and suggestions.

Gerald was committed to his life-long Catholic faith and was a member of St. Robert Bellarmine Church. He was active in the Flushing Knights of Columbus, often volunteering to run Bingo nights, collect funds for those in need, assist with holiday sausage-making and other community-service oriented projects.

Gerald married his loving wife Bernadine (Jurczyk) on April 26, 1975, at St. John Cantius Church in Detroit, Michigan. As family and friends can attest, they truly were made for each other. They established their home and built a life in Flushing, Michigan where they would raise two children and spend the next 48 years together. Gerald saw his children through paper routes, football games, dance recitals, broken bones, the life cycles of countless family pets, driving lessons, going off to college and all of the other ups and downs of growing up. Over the years, he always accepted his children’s friends and significant others without hesitation, welcoming them as family and treating them to both his kindness and his dry wit.

As much as he loved raising his own children, Gerald relished his time as a grandfather, answering to both “Papa” and “Grandpa.” He was always ready to get into some sort of trouble with his grandchildren, whether it be sneaking a treat, getting involved in a water balloon fight, or any other sort of mischief. He showed up for countless activities and adventures and was always so proud of all of their accomplishments. His unwavering love and fun-loving spirit will be deeply missed.

Gerald is survived by his wife, Bernadine; children, Alyssa Baumann and wife Rebecca Zader, Kevin Baumann and wife Karyn Baumann; grandchildren, Evan, Elliot, Emma, Matthew; siblings, Ken Bauman and wife Mary Ann Bauman, Joyce Baumann, Kay Stamper; sister-in-law, Margaret Baumann; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his infant daughter, Rebecca; his parents; siblings, Tony Baumann, Carol Baumann, and Dennis Baumann; brother-in-law, George Stamper; and sister-in-law, Nellie Bauman.
