Betty Margaret Barcus Weber, daughter of Norman and Emily Staines born August 4, 1932, passed away peacefully on October 4, 2026. Betty was a child of WWII England who loved dance (something she continued to do at weddings) and was very proud of her accomplishments in other sports such as track and field and cricket. Betty married an American GI and after the war ventured to the US on the Queen Mary. Two children, Linda and Gary were born of that union.
She was then employed by widower Darwin (Dub) Barcus as a housekeeper and nanny for his two children, Jim and Terry. They eventually married and had two children together, Susie and Christy forming a “his, hers, and theirs” family of 8. During this time Betty worked at the old Strawsine plant in Corunna, MI.
She later honed her skills in the kitchen; eventually landing a spot in the kitchen at the Owosso Country Club where she spent 30 years and was proudly known as the “Pie Lady”. She was very meticulous and adamant about the appropriate presentation of the foods she served because, for Betty, cooking was her way of showing love.
She and Dub made a number of trips to England to visit her family there. They loved Lions football and camping with the family. Following Dub’s death in 1986, she married John D. Weber. She and John continued the passion for lions football, camping and travelling. John passed in 2000 and Betty carried on with seemingly endless energy that amazed everyone who knew her: enjoying her English gardens, serving as President of the VFW Ladies Auxiliary, watching the “Soaps” , celebrating her grandchildren' s accomplishments, and working at the country club well into her 80’s. Betty’s greatest love was her mother country and making pies for friends, family and loved ones. If Betty baked you a pie, you knew you were loved.
She is preceded in death by oldest son Jim, sister Dorothy, and brother Eric. She is survived by her dear sister Ann in England; daughters Terry Lange, Linda K. Letts, Susan Tarrant, and Christy Ellis; son Gary Burcham; 12 grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren
In honor of Betty, please take time to sit and enjoy a cup of tea today. Don’t forget the milk and sugar!
