Donald Val Barta age 83 of Owosso, Michigan passed on peacefully surrounded by family on Christmas Day of 2025. Mass of Christian Burial and a celebration of life will be held on Monday, December 29, 2025 at 11:00am at St. Mary Catholic Church in Morrice, burial will follow in Bethany Cemetery. The Barta family will receive friends at Watkins Brothers Funeral Homes at 520 W. Main St. Owosso, on Sunday from 2:00pm-4:00pm & 6:00pm-8:00pm. The Rosary will be prayed at 7:30 at the funeral home.
Born in Owosso, Michigan on July 22, 1942, Don was the son of Valerian and Blanche Barta. Don met the love of his life, Elaine Rose Wesley, when he found out they were neighbors and wrote her a letter asking for a date. She giggled as she read his words and decided to go on the date, and the adventure of their life began. They were married on December 31, 1973. Don graduated from St. Paul High School in 1960 and joined the army shortly after. Don worked as a truck driver, police officer, operated S & S mobile station and wrecker service, and retired from General Motors. Don enjoyed auto mechanics— he could fix anything and was always happy to lend a helping hand. He was a member of the mid Michigan Old Gas Tractor Assc and he meticulously restored a 1939 John Deere G, a tractor he had admired since childhood. Don and his wife Elaine loved traditional Czech polka music. Elaine taught him to dance & he was a so fun to dance with— gliding across the floor floor with pure joy. He was an active member of St. Mary’s Church in Morrice, a Eucharistic minister, member of Knights of Columbus and helped with the Perry garden club. Don and Elaine loved traveling to their winter home in Florida with their fuzzy little poodle, Cooper, and spending time with their family. He was an avid hunter and fisherman and enjoyed deer camp with his sons and brothers.
Don is lovingly remembered by his wife of 52 years, Elaine Rose Barta, his children, Lawrence (Kim) St. Onge, David (Renee Flynn-Brown) St. Onge, Gregory (Maura) St. Onge, Kimberly (David Enslin) St. Onge, Kristie (Adam Krajniak) Barta, Kerri (Jason Yolkiewicz) Barta; his grandchildren, Colton (Danielle) St. Onge, Brennen (Brionne Mix) St. Onge, Lisa Hearn, Amanda Turner, Kelly (Gareth) St. Onge, Jordan (Sam) Machala, Jena Machala, Karson (Hunter Defrenn) Spiker, Jacob (Kelci) Enslin, Michael Enslin, Max (Maya Metz) Mccullough, Sam (Wilson Winebarger) McCullough, Chauncey (Jasmine Jorgensen) Krajniak, Silas Krajniak, Alex Schulz, Claire Hiliker, and many great-grandchildren whom he loved dearly.
Memorial contributions can be made in Don’s name to the Knights of Columbus or the Residential Hospice Foundation.
